Chapter 5 - The Weakest Link

Chloe Vance sat in the lavish penthouse Marcus had bought her, sipping espresso and browsing luxury real estate listings in Switzerland. She was already imagining her new life as the undisputed queen of Mitchell Holdings.

Her fantasy was shattered when her phone buzzed with a news alert: CEO Marcus Mitchell Arrested at Headquarters on Embezzlement Charges.

Chloe dropped her cup, the porcelain shattering against the marble floor. "No, no, no..."

Before she could pack a bag, the doorbell rang. She froze. Walking slowly to the video intercom, she saw Detective Hayes standing outside with a search warrant.

Within minutes, the penthouse was overrun with federal agents seizing laptops, hard drives, and designer bags bought with stolen corporate funds. Chloe was brought into an interrogation room at the precinct, her hands shaking so badly she couldn't light her cigarette.

Detective Hayes sat across from her, tossing a file onto the metal table.

"Marcus is going down, Chloe," Hayes said smoothly. "He embezzled twenty million from the company. But that’s the light stuff. Let’s talk about last night at 9:42 p.m."

Chloe swallowed hard. "I don't know what you're talking about. I was home all night."

"Really?" Hayes smiled, leaning forward. "Because we have a satellite ping from a yacht in Puget Sound, and a voice recording of Marcus calling you right after he pushed Sarah Mitchell into the freezing ocean."

Chloe’s face turned entirely white. "He... he said it was an accident! He told me she slipped!"

"That's not what the recording says," Hayes lied expertly, pressing Chloe’s panic button. "On the tape, you asked him if anyone saw him and if the cameras were off. That makes you an accessory to attempted capital murder. In Washington state, that carries life without parole. Unless..."

"Unless what?" Chloe sobbed, completely breaking down.

"Unless you give us everything."
