Chapter 1 - The Audio Evidence and The Mistress's Voice

The hospital room fell into a suffocating silence as Detective Hayes pressed play on the waterproof phone. The initial audio was exactly what Sarah had described—the gentle lap of waves, the clinking of champagne glasses, and Marcus Mitchell’s smooth, calculated voice spinning a web of false romance.

Then came the sudden, violent sound of rushing wind, a sickening thud, and Sarah’s sharp, terrified scream that cut off abruptly as she hit the water.

Detective Hayes winced, her eyes darting to Sarah, who clamped her eyes shut, tears leaking down her pale cheeks. Dr. Rodriguez stepped closer, placing a comforting hand on Sarah’s trembling shoulder.

But the recording didn't stop there.

For the next five minutes, there was only the heavy thrum of the yacht’s engine and the whistling wind. Then, the sound of footsteps echoed on the digital track—heavy, deliberate footsteps walking back toward the cockpit.

A phone keypad beeped on the recording. Marcus had placed a call using the boat's Bluetooth speaker system.

"Chloe," Marcus’s voice rang out, chillingly calm, completely devoid of the panic a man should feel if his pregnant wife had just fallen overboard. "It’s done."

A woman’s voice, sharp and eager, filtered through the speakers. "Are you sure, Marcus? Did anyone see you? What about the cameras on the marina?"

"I disabled the stern feed before we unmoored," Marcus replied, his tone dripping with cold arrogance. "The currents in Puget Sound will do the rest. By tomorrow morning, she’ll just be another tragic statistic. A pregnant wife, a slippery deck, a tragic accident. I’m heading back to the dock now. Start packing your things. The penthouse is yours."

"Oh, Marcus... I love you," Chloe whispered, a sickening giggle trailing off before the call ended.

Detective Hayes stopped the recording. Her face was grim, her jaw locked in tight fury.

"Mrs. Mitchell," Hayes said, her voice dropping to a low, fiercely protective register. "This isn't just evidence of attempted murder. This is premeditated conspiracy. He thinks you're dead. Right now, that is our greatest advantage."

Sarah looked up, her eyes flashing with a cold, newfound resolve. The fragile, broken woman who had been pulled from the ocean was gone. In her place stood a mother who had almost lost everything.

"What do we do?" Sarah asked.
