Chapter 4 - The Legal Battle Begins

The front doorbell of the Hartman estate rang precisely at 9:00 a.m.

Arthur Vance stood on the porch, a tall, imposing man in a charcoal bespoke suit, holding a leather briefcase and an expression of grim professional curiosity. When Mrs. Gable opened the door, he stepped into the foyer, peeling off his leather gloves.

"Mrs. Gable. Where is the fugitive?" Arthur asked dryly, though a hint of amusement danced in his eyes. He had known Michael since they were in law school together; nothing Michael did surprised him anymore—except, perhaps, the fact that he was finally stepping out of his mourning shroud.

"He's in the study with her, Mr. Vance," Mrs. Gable replied, taking his coat. "She's a sweet child. And she belongs here. I can feel it in my bones."

Arthur nodded, walking down the long hallway toward the double doors of the private study. He pushed them open without knocking.

Michael was sitting behind his mahogany desk, reviewing a stack of documents, while Lily sat cross-legged on the leather sofa, coloring in a picture book with a brand-new box of sixty-4 crayola crayons Michael had ordered express delivery.

"Arthur," Michael said, standing up to shake his old friend's hand. "Thank you for coming on such short notice."

"You called me at 6:00 a.m. declaring you needed to audit the entire state foster care system and adopt a homeless child within the week," Arthur replied, taking a seat in front of the desk and casting a curious glance at Lily, who offered him a shy wave with a purple crayon in her hand. "Naturally, I canceled my morning depositions. What is this about, Michael? You've spent six months refusing to sign routine corporate proxy votes, and now you want to be a father?"

Michael walked around the desk, picked up the porcelain doll from the side table, and placed it gently in front of Arthur.

"Look at the stitching on the dress," Michael instructed quietly.

Arthur adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, leaning over the doll. He read the embroidered name: Emily Hartman.

The lawyer’s professional detachment evaporated instantly. Arthur had attended Michael and Emily’s wedding. He had watched Emily donate half her personal inheritance to children's charities without ever seeking public praise. He knew how deeply her loss had shattered his friend.

"Emily made this?" Arthur asked, his voice losing its sharp edge.

"She gave it to Lily’s mother years ago at a shelter," Michael explained, returning to his chair. "Lily’s mother died two years ago, and the child has been surviving on the streets ever since. Last night, she walked into my life in the middle of a rainstorm in City Park. She asked me if I was hungry too."

Arthur swallowed hard, staring at the doll before looking up at Michael. "Do the authorities know she's missing? Is there a missing person's report or CPS file?"

"That's why I brought you here," Michael said firmly. "I want you to use every resource at our disposal to investigate the social services files in Denver. Find out who was assigned to Lily and her mother after Anna passed away. Find out why a seven-year-old child was left to rot on the pavement."

"And if we find them?" Arthur asked, raising an eyebrow. "If there are relatives? If the state claims jurisdiction?"

"Then we buy the best legal representation money can buy," Michael declared, slamming his hand lightly on the desk. "We challenge the state, we expose their negligence, and we secure full legal custody and adoption rights before the week is out. Lily is not going into the foster system. She is staying right here."

Lily looked up from her coloring book, her big brown eyes fixed on Michael. "Are you really going to be my dad?"

Michael’s fierce expression melted instantly. He walked over to the sofa, knelt down beside her, and took her small hand in his.

"If you'll have me, Lily," Michael said, his voice thick with emotion. "I would be honored to be your dad."

Lily threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder. Michael closed his eyes, holding her tight, feeling the broken pieces of his heart finally locking back into place.
