Chapter 9 - Shadows and Sunlight

That evening, the celebration continued at the mansion, but in a much quieter, more intimate fashion.

The dining room table was set for three—Michael, Lily, and Mrs. Gable, who had finally agreed to sit as an honored guest rather than working the event. The kitchen staff had prepared a magnificent feast, but the mood was relaxed and filled with the easy warmth of a real family.

After dinner, while Mrs. Gable cleared the dessert plates, Michael and Lily walked out onto the back terrace. The Denver evening was cool and clear, the sky painted in violet and indigo as the first stars began to pierce the twilight.

Lily leaned against the stone balustrade, holding Rosie—who had finally received a replacement cloth arm sewn by Mrs. Gable’s skilled hands—and looked up at the glittering expanse of the night sky.

"Dad?" Lily asked quietly.

"Yes, bug?" Michael answered, standing beside her with his hands in his pockets.

"Do you think Mom and Emily are up there looking down at us?"

Michael looked up at the stars, feeling a gentle breeze brush against his cheek like a soft touch. He didn't hesitate.

"I know they are, Lily," Michael said, wrapping his arm around her shoulders. "In fact, I think they're probably sitting on a porch somewhere up there, drinking tea, and laughing at how much trouble we've put Mrs. Gable through this year."

Lily laughed, a bright, musical sound that carried out across the silent gardens. "We haven't been that much trouble. I only dropped my fork in the mashed potatoes once."

"Only once," Michael agreed with a mock-serious nod. "A stellar record."

Lily turned her head, looking up at him with those deep, wise brown eyes that had first captured his soul under the cottonwood tree. "Thank you for finding me, Dad."

Michael knelt down, looking straight into her eyes, letting all the love, devotion, and fierce protectiveness he felt pour out in a single, unwavering gaze.

"I didn't find you, Lily," Michael corrected softly, his voice trembling with emotion. "You found me. You walked right through the dark and pulled me back into the light."

Lily smiled, reaching up to touch the side of his face. "Then I guess we make a pretty good team."

"The best team in the world," Michael whispered.
