Chapter 10 - My Safe Team

Two years later.
The ocean waves rolled gently onto the sandy shore of the coastal beach, leaving behind soft white foam that sparkled under the late afternoon sun. The sky was a painted canvas of violet, gold, and soft blush pink.
On a large blanket laid out near the dunes, a wooden picnic basket sat filled with sandwiches, fruit, and ice-cold lemonade.
Natalie stood near the water's edge, the cool sea foam washing over her bare feet. She took a deep breath of the salty breeze, feeling an overwhelming sense of profound peace.
Behind her, footsteps sounded on the wet sand.
Graham wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin gently on her shoulder. "What are you thinking about?"
"Just how far we've come," Natalie murmured, leaning back against his chest. "Look at her."
A few yards down the beach, Maisie was sprint-running along the shoreline, chasing a flock of seagulls. Her laughter carried over the sound of the crashing waves—a rich, bell-like sound that filled the entire beach with life. She was nine now, tall, athletic, and fiercely independent, thriving at the top of her class and surrounded by loyal friends.
Vivian’s final appeal had been denied six months prior, cementing her permanent incarceration and complete legal ban from ever contacting the family again. The shadow that had once threatened to destroy their lives was completely gone, replaced by light, trust, and unshakeable love.
Graham reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a small, velvet-lined box. He didn't drop to one knee with grand theatrical flair. He simply turned Natalie around to face him, holding the box open between them.
Inside sat a simple, elegant silver ring set with a clear, brilliant diamond.
"Natalie," Graham said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with an emotion so profound it made her breath catch. "Two years ago, you saved my daughter. But more than that, you showed us what real unconditional love and courage look like. You rebuilt our family piece by piece."
He took a step closer, his thumb gently wiping away a happy tear from her cheek.
"I don't want a grand, perfect illusion of a life. I want a real life. A life with arguments about ice cream, long road trips, messy kitchens, and you. Will you marry us?"
Natalie looked from the sparkling ring up to Graham’s warm, loving eyes.
Before she could speak, a splash of water hit Graham’s back.
"Did he ask yet?!" Maisie yelled, running up to them with a giant sea shell in her hands and wet sand all over her knees. "Nat! Did you say yes?!"
Natalie laughed, her heart bursting with pure joy. She looked at the little girl who had fought so hard to find her voice, and at the man who had learned to truly listen.
"Yes," Natalie said, leaning up to press her lips to Graham’s in a warm, lingering kiss. "A thousand times yes."
Maisie let out a wild cheer, throwing her hands in the air and doing a terrible, hilarious victory dance on the wet sand. "YES! No more boring formal dinners! We get to have taco night every single Friday!"
Graham laughed, pulling both Natalie and Maisie into a huge, warm group embrace.

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm golden glow across the water. They stood together on the shore—three hearts bound not by duty or illusion, but by truth, courage, and an unbreakable bond of love.
They were, finally and forever, a complete safe team.
