Chapter 9 - The Voice Found

A year later.

The summer sun shone brightly over the courtyard of Lincoln Elementary School. The annual end-of-year assembly was in full swing, crowded with parents, teachers, and energetic children celebrating the upcoming break.

Natalie sat in the second row of the auditorium, flanked by Graham. On Graham’s lap was a small digital video camera, focused sharply on the middle of the elevated wooden stage.

"Is she nervous?" Natalie whispered, leaning her head closer to Graham’s shoulder.

"She was bouncing off the walls this morning," Graham whispered back, a bright glint of pride in his eyes. "She said she rehearsed her speech four times to her stuffed animals."

The school principal stepped up to the microphone. "And now, to deliver the student closing address for the third-grade class, please welcome Maisie Vance!"

The auditorium erupted in applause.

Maisie stepped up to the podium. She was dressed in a bright blue dress, her hair pinned back with tiny, glittering clips. She didn't look down at her shoes. She didn't pull down her sleeves to hide her arms. She stood tall, adjusted the microphone with a loud, ringing screech that made the audience chuckle, and looked straight out at the crowd.

Natalie felt a sudden surge of emotion, tears gathering in the corners of her eyes.

"Hello everybody," Maisie’s voice rang clear and confident through the speakers. "Today I want to talk about what it means to be brave."

Graham reached over, holding Natalie’s hand tightly in his lap.

"A lot of people think being brave means you aren't scared of anything," Maisie continued, reading from her colorful index cards. "Like dark rooms, or tall slides, or mean people. But my dad and my friend Natalie taught me that being brave actually means using your voice even when your hands are shaking."

The audience went entirely still, captivated by the absolute sincerity in the eight-year-old’s voice.

"When you are quiet because you are scared, the scary things stay big," Maisie said, looking directly at row two where Graham and Natalie were sitting. "But when you speak up and tell the truth, the people who really love you will always come runnin' to help you. So don't ever be afraid to say when something is wrong. Your voice is the strongest thing you have."

The principal wiped a tear from her eye. In the second row, Graham was unashamedly wiping tears from his cheeks, his smile wider than the ocean.

As Maisie concluded her speech with a bow, the entire auditorium stood up, breaking into a thunderous standing ovation.

Maisie waved wildly from the stage, pointing her finger right at Graham and Natalie, her face illuminated by the brightest, purest smile of absolute freedom.
