Chapter 6 - Fracture Points

By the following week, the Vance home had been transformed into a fortress. High-definition security cameras monitored every angle of the yard, motion-sensor spotlights illuminated the driveway, and a private security guard remained stationed in a vehicle across the street.

Yet, despite the physical protection, the psychological pressure inside the home was palpable.

Graham was stretched to his absolute limit. He spent his days at the office staring at his computer screen without seeing it, his mind constantly darting to his phone every time an unknown number called. At home, he became overly protective, barely letting Maisie out of his sight, which inadvertently reignited her anxiety.

Natalie stepped into the role of the steady anchor. She organized daily routines, cooked warm meals, and created a structured, peaceful environment that allowed both Graham and Maisie to breathe.

One afternoon, while Maisie was at her child counseling session, Natalie met Graham at a quiet cafe downtown.

"You aren't sleeping, Graham," Natalie said, pushing a hot cup of black coffee toward him. "You look like you're about to collapse."

Graham rubbed his tired eyes, his fingers trembling slightly. "How am I supposed to sleep, Nat? Every time I close my eyes, I see Vivian standing in the snow staring at my daughter’s room. I failed to protect Maisie for months while we were living under the same roof. How do I know I'm not failing her right now?"

"Guilt isn't going to help her, Graham," Natalie said firmly but with deep empathy. "You made a mistake by trusting someone who was a master at deception. But you corrected it the second you saw the truth. You chose Maisie. You are fighting for her every single day."

"I just want this to be over," Graham groaned, leaning back in his chair. "The police searched her old apartment, but she vacated it three weeks ago. She’s living out of her car or short-term rentals, staying under the radar. She has no job, no ties, nothing left to lose. That’s what makes her dangerous."

Natalie leaned in, her eyes sharp. "If she has nothing left to lose, she’s operating on emotion, not logic. And emotional people make mistakes."

"What do you mean?"

"Vivian’s entire life was built on appearances," Natalie explained. "She loved the prestige of your career, the suburban lifestyle, the image of being a perfect, cultured mother. She didn't just want a husband; she wanted the social standing that came with you. Where did she get her pride from before she met you?"

Graham paused, searching his memory through the whirlwind of their past courtship. "Her old job... she was an event coordinator at the Royal Crest Country Club. She was fired two years ago after a bitter dispute with the management over missing funds, though they never pressed formal charges to avoid a scandal."

"And where did she meet you?" Natalie asked.

"At a charity gala... hosted at the Royal Crest." Graham’s eyes widened as the realization hit him. "She still has contacts there. She used to brag about how the staff there owed her favors."

Natalie pulled out her phone. "If she’s trying to hide while staying close to your circle, she’s going to rely on places where she feels powerful. Let’s call the investigator."

Before Natalie could complete the call, Graham’s phone buzzed sharply on the table. It was an automated alert from his home security application.

ALERT: Motion Detected - Rear Perimeter.

Graham’s face drained of all color. "Maisie..."

"She’s at the counselor's office with your sister, right?" Natalie asked, her heart hammering.

"Yes, but..." Graham tapped the screen, opening the live camera feed.

The camera showed the back patio. A package—a brightly wrapped, pink gift box—had been dropped right on the wooden deck steps. Sitting beside it was a single, fresh red rose.
