Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Realm

Over the next year, the city of Boston witnessed a transformation that no one thought possible.
Matteo Ricci remained the head of the Ricci organization, but the nature of his empire shifted dramatically. Using the vast wealth and resources at his disposal, he resurrected his brother Anthony's old vision, building a massive, legitimate foundation dedicated to protecting vulnerable women and children from domestic violence and human trafficking.
The old safehouse was renovated, transformed from a cold, guarded fortress into a bright, beautiful family estate surrounded by blooming gardens and vibrant orchards.
On a warm afternoon in late spring, the estate grounds were filled with laughter and music.
Paul stood by the outdoor grill, wearing an apron over his suit pants, arguing good-naturedly with the security team about how to properly sear steaks. The men who had once known only warfare were now learning how to live in peace.
Matteo stood on the wooden porch, wearing a simple linen shirt, a cup of coffee in his hand. He looked healthier, the dark circles beneath his eyes gone, the deep lines of stress on his face softened by time and joy.
Sarah walked out onto the porch, wrapping her arms around his waist from behind and resting her head against his back.
"What are you thinking about?" she asked softly.
Matteo laid his hand over hers. "I was thinking about the text message."
"11:42 p.m.," Sarah smiled. "The luckiest wrong number in history."
"It wasn't a wrong number," Matteo said, turning around to pull Sarah into a warm embrace. "It was Anthony making sure I didn't lose my soul."
Out on the lawn, eight-year-old Lily was running around with a golden retriever puppy Matteo had bought her for her birthday. Her laughter carried across the breeze, pure, clear, and untainted by the horror of her past.
She stopped, saw Matteo watching her, and waved frantically. "Daddy! Come look at what Prince found!"
Matteo froze for a brief second. Daddy.
The word vibrated through his soul, filling every dark corner with warmth and purpose. A year ago, he was a ruthless mob boss destined for a cold grave. Today, he was a father.

Sarah beamed up at him, her eyes sparkling. "Well? Go on, Dad. She's waiting for you."
Matteo smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached his eyes—and stepped off the porch, walking out into the sunlight.
