Chapter 4 - The Harbor Confrontation

The harbor warehouse smelled of salt water, diesel, and rust. It was neutral ground, but neutral ground was a lie comfortable men told themselves before they got shot in the back.

Matteo walked into the vast, dimly lit space accompanied only by Paul and four armed men. On the far side of the warehouse stood Liam O'Connor, surrounded by a dozen heavily armed Irish mobsters. Beside Liam stood a tall, silver-haired man in a tailored Italian suit—Dominic Rossi, an envoy from the New York Syndicate.

"Matteo Ricci," Liam snarled, stepping forward. He was a stocky man with a face reddened by alcohol and malice. "You're stepping into my backyard now? You took Marcus Vance. He was my man."

"Marcus Vance was an animal who beat women and children," Matteo said calmly, his hands resting casually inside the pockets of his dark coat. "He wasn't a man. He was vermin."

"He was my vermin!" Liam roared. "You broke the code! You invaded South Boston territory without clearance from the Council! Dominic, tell him!"

Dominic Rossi stepped forward, his eyes analytical. "Matteo. The rules of the Council are clear. No family intervenes in another family's domestic territory without prior consent. You extracted civilians from Liam's zone and executed one of his operatives. Why?"

Matteo looked directly into Dominic's eyes. "Because the request came through my family's line."

Liam laughed loudly, a grating sound. "Your line? Marcus was shaking down a nobody! A broken woman who owed him fifty grand! What, did the great Mafia Boss of Boston suddenly get a bleeding heart? Or are you sleeping with the girl's mother?"

In a fraction of a second, the atmosphere in the warehouse plummeted below freezing.

Matteo didn't draw a weapon. He moved with terrifying, inhuman speed. Before Liam’s guards could lift their submachine guns, Matteo had closed the twenty-foot distance, grabbed Liam by the throat, and slammed his head into the hood of a nearby steel shipping container.

CRACK.

The sound of metal buckling echoed through the warehouse. Liam slid to his knees, blood pouring from his nose, gasping for air.

A dozen guns cocked simultaneously, aimed straight at Matteo's head. Matteo's four men instantly raised their own weapons, taking cover behind steel barrels.

Matteo didn't even look at the guns pointed at him. He stood over Liam, looking down like an ancient god delivering judgment.

"Listen to me very carefully, Liam," Matteo said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "If you ever speak of that family again, I will not just kill you. I will dismantle everything you have built, brick by brick, until your name is wiped from this city."

Dominic Rossi raised a hand, ordering the Irish guards to hold their fire. "Enough!" Dominic commanded. He stared at Matteo with a mix of respect and caution. "Matteo... this isn't like you. You are logical. You are ruthless. Why burn a ten-year peace treaty over a child?"

Matteo straightened his tie, stepping back from the groaning Irish boss.

"Because twenty-five years ago, I let a child die because I was following 'the rules'," Matteo said, his voice cutting through the damp warehouse air. "I won't do it again. The woman and her daughter are under my personal protection. Anyone who touches them dies. That is not a negotiation. That is a fact."

Dominic fell silent. He knew the story of Anthony Ricci and the tragedy that had birthed Matteo's cold reign. He nodded slowly. "The Council will hear of this. But for now... the girl stays with you. Liam, keep your men away."

Liam glared at Matteo with pure hatred, wiping blood from his chin. "This isn't over, Ricci," he hissed softly. "Everyone has a weakness. You just showed us yours."
