Chapter 8 - The Price of Freedom

In the aftermath of the siege, the underworld of the East Coast went deathly quiet.
The absolute, ruthless destruction of Liam O'Connor's faction sent shockwaves through every syndicate family from Boston to New York. No one dared challenge Matteo Ricci. He had demonstrated that he was not only tactical and powerful, but prepared to tear down the entire city to protect what was his.
Two days after the attack, Matteo sat in the suite of a luxury hotel in downtown Boston, where Sarah and Lily were being kept under absolute protective lockdown.
The door opened, and Dominic Rossi walked in alone, carrying a heavy leather briefcase. He sat down across from Matteo.
"You caused quite a storm, Matteo," Dominic said, setting the briefcase on the glass coffee table. "The Council met yesterday. Some wanted you executed for breaking the peace."
"And?" Matteo asked, unfazed.
"And I reminded them that you have enough military firepower and financial dirt to destroy every family on the eastern seaboard within forty-eight hours," Dominic smiled faintly. "The Council has agreed to recognize your full jurisdiction over South Boston. The Irish Syndicate's assets are yours."
Dominic opened the briefcase, revealing a stack of legal documents and clean passports.
"Furthermore, Clara's old archives—the dirt your brother tried to protect—were recovered from Liam's safehouse. I destroyed them myself. The past is dead, Matteo. Sarah and her daughter are completely free. No debt, no syndicate ties, no targets on their backs."
Matteo looked at the clean passports. "Thank you, Dominic."
"So, what happens now?" Dominic asked, standing up. "Are you sending them away to Europe?"
Matteo didn't answer right away. He looked toward the bedroom door, where he could hear Lily laughing as she played a game with one of the female security officers.
"That was the plan," Matteo admitted softly.
"Matteo, I've known you for twenty years," Dominic said, placing a hand on Matteo's shoulder. "You've been a dead man walking since your brother died. For the first time, I see life in your eyes. Don't throw away a chance at a real life just because you're afraid of your own shadow."
After Dominic left, Matteo walked into the bedroom. Sarah was sitting by the window, watching the sunset over the Boston skyline.
"Is it over?" Sarah asked softly, turning to him.
"It's over," Matteo said. He walked over and placed the documents on the table. "Clean passports. New identities if you want them. Full financial support. You can go anywhere in the world. You will be safe."
Sarah looked at the passports, then looked up at Matteo, her eyes filling with tears. "Is this what you want, Matteo? For us to leave?"
"It's the safest option for you," Matteo insisted, though his voice lacked conviction. "My world is dark, Sarah. Violence follows me."
Sarah stood up, stepping close to him. She reached up and placed a soft hand on his cheek. Matteo flinched slightly at the warmth of her touch, unaccustomed to such tenderness.
"You saved our lives, Matteo," Sarah whispered. "You protected my daughter when no one else would. You brought light into our darkness. If you send us away, you're not protecting us... you're breaking our hearts."

Lily ran into the room, jumping up and wrapping her arms around Matteo's leg. "Don't send us away, Big Shield! I want to stay with you!"
Matteo looked down at the child, then back at Sarah. The heavy, icy armor he had worn around his heart for twenty-five years finally shattered into a thousand pieces, leaving behind a man who was ready to feel again.
