Chapter 7 - The Arrest on the Stage

The ballroom exploded into chaotic noise. Board members jumped to their feet, cameras flashed as corporate journalists who had sneaked into the room began recording, and attorneys shouted over one another.
Arthur Pendelton backed away from the podium, his face red and slick with sweat, looking desperately around the room for support. "Investors! Look at what he's doing! He's destroying the company's reputation in public!"
"No, Arthur," Ethan said, standing tall beside the police officers. "You destroyed your own reputation when you decided to rob the very people who clean your toilets and make your beds."
The police officers grabbed Pendelton’s arms, twisting them behind his back and clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. The man who had entered the ballroom an hour ago as a arrogant corporate king was led down the center aisle of the Grand Ballroom in chains, screaming threats at his legal team until the doors slammed shut behind him.
Ethan turned back to the microphone. The room slowly grew quiet again as the remaining board members looked up at him, stunned, humbled, and terrified.
"For three years," Ethan spoke, his voice calm and steady once more, "I allowed myself to stay in the shadows because I thought grief required silence. I thought as long as the hotels made money, Sarah's legacy was safe. I was wrong."
He motioned for Lupita to step up onto the stage beside him.
"This is Lupita Hernandez," Ethan introduced. "Last night, when I walked into this lobby tired, carrying my sleeping daughter and damaged flowers, two people trained under Arthur Pendelton’s system treated me like trash. But Lupita did not see my jacket. She did not see my money. She saw a father and a tired little girl. She brought us water. She fixed the flowers. She offered kindness when no one was watching."
Ethan looked at the board members.
"Effective immediately, I am reclaiming 100% operational authority over Vance Hospitality Group. All operational budget cuts to back-of-house staff are reinstated with a fifteen percent wage increase across all properties nationwide. And Lupita Hernandez is officially confirmed as Executive Director of Guest Experience for the Midwest Division."
The board members sat in silence for two seconds. Then, an older investor in the front row—a woman who had known Sarah Vance years ago—began to clap.

Within seconds, the entire ballroom erupted into a standing ovation.
Lupita wiped tears of gratitude from her face, looking at Ethan with profound respect. Ethan offered her a warm, genuine smile—the first true smile he had worn in three long years.
