Chapter 6 - The Emergency Meeting

By 2:45 PM, the Grand Ballroom of the Grand Regent Chicago was filled with tension. The massive crystal chandeliers cast a brilliant light over thirty of the most powerful hospitality investors, board members, and corporate attorneys in the country.

Arthur Pendelton stood near the podium at the front of the raised stage, holding a glass of sparkling water, whispering confidently to two major institutional investors from New York.

"Ethan has lost his mind," Pendelton whispered smoothly. "He fired Sterling without cause, humiliated the front-desk staff, and handed a high-level executive position to an uneducated housekeeper. He's emotionally unstable. We vote to remove his voting control today, or the stock value will plummet twenty percent by market close tomorrow."

The investors nodded in agreement, looking at their watches.

At 2:55 PM, the double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.

Lupita Hernandez stepped into the room. She was no longer wearing her housekeeper’s apron. She wore a simple, elegant dark navy suit that Ethan had instructed the hotel's boutique to provide for her that morning. Beside her walked young Lily, dressed in a warm yellow coat, holding her stuffed gray bunny.

Behind them came Ethan Vance.

He was not dressed in his scuffed jacket or plain flannel. He wore a crisp, dark charcoal suit, tailored to perfection—the suit he used to wear when he and Sarah stood before congress to advocate for fair labor laws in the service industry. His eyes were clear, sharp, and commanding.

The room fell into a sudden, surprised hush as Ethan walked down the center aisle, holding Lily’s hand, with Lupita walking proudly at his side.

Pendelton smirked from the stage, stepping up to the microphone. "Ethan. Glad you could join us. I see you brought your... new management team."

A few polite chuckles echoed from Pendelton’s allies in the front row.

Ethan walked up the steps of the stage, placing Lily gently on a comfortable armchair beside the podium with a small sketchbook and crayons. "Stay here for a minute, sweetie," he whispered.

He then stepped up to the microphone, looking out at the thirty men and women sitting in the room.

"Welcome to the Grand Regent Chicago," Ethan spoke, his voice deep, resonant, and effortlessly filling the vast ballroom without shouting. "Arthur called this meeting to vote on removing my operational control of Vance Hospitality Group. He claims I am emotionally unstable. He claims I ruined the reputation of this hotel last night."

Pendelton adjusted his tie, stepping forward. "You did ruin it, Ethan! You fired a top-performing General Manager over a trivial interaction with front-desk staff!"

"Let’s talk about that trivial interaction, Arthur," Ethan said quietly.

Ethan signaled toward the back of the room. Julian Thorne pushed open the doors, carrying a heavy leather briefcase and accompanied by two uniformed officers from the Chicago Police Department’s Financial Crimes Division.

Pendelton’s face suddenly lost its confident composure. His hand tightened around his glass.

"What is this?" Pendelton demanded. "What are police doing here?"

"I built Vance Hospitality on a single principle," Ethan declared, pointing to the investors. "That luxury without empathy is garbage. But while I was grieving my wife, Arthur Pendelton and Marcus Sterling were practicing a very different kind of hospitality."

Julian Thorne stepped onto the stage, placing a stack of legal documents directly onto the podium before the board.

"Over the past twenty-four months," Ethan announced, his voice slicing through the room like a broadsword, "Arthur Pendelton and Marcus Sterling systematically falsified operational budget reports. They cut heating in staff breakrooms, eliminated night-shift healthcare allowances, and reduced worker safety protocols across six properties."

The board members began murmuring in alarm, leaning forward to inspect the documents Julian was distributing.

"And where did that money go, Arthur?" Ethan asked, leaning over the podium, staring directly into Pendelton’s panic-stricken eyes. "It didn't go to investor dividends. It was wired directly into A&M Global Logistics—a shell company registered in Grand Cayman, owned entirely by Arthur Pendelton and Marcus Sterling."

A collective gasp echoed across the ballroom.

"That's a lie!" Pendelton shrieked, his voice cracking. "This is a setup! You forged those documents!"

"The wire transfers carry your personal digital signature, Mr. Pendelton," Officer Miller announced from the stage, stepping forward with handcuffs. "Federal bank auditors cleared the trace two hours ago. Arthur Pendelton, you are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, and embezzlement."
