Chapter 9 - The Promise on the Hill

By mid-summer, the last shadows of the past had completely cleared.
The Ward Community Health Foundation was recognized globally as a model for corporate social responsibility. Marissa was invited to speak at the International Health Summit in Geneva, her quiet confidence and fierce dedication inspiring leaders from around the world.
On a warm Saturday evening in July, Elias drove Marissa and Toby out to the Ward estate in the hills overlooking the city.
The estate sat on fifty acres of rolling green grass, surrounded by ancient oak trees and vibrant flower gardens. Arthur was sitting on the wide stone patio, wearing a cardigan, patiently teaching six-year-old Toby how to assemble a wooden model airplane.
"Look, Mom!" Toby shouted, holding up the half-finished plane as Marissa walked out onto the patio. "Grandpa Art said I can paint the wings red!"
"Red is a great color, sweetie," Marissa smiled, kissing the top of Toby’s dark head before walking over to Arthur. "How are you feeling today, Arthur?"
"Never better, girl," Arthur grinned, taking a sip of lemonade. "The doctor said my heart is operating at eighty percent efficiency. Enough to outrun this little rascal in the garden!"
Elias stepped out onto the patio, carrying two glasses of wine. He handed one to Marissa, his fingers lingering against hers.
"Walk with me?" Elias asked softly.
Marissa nodded, offering him a warm smile.
They walked slowly down the stone pathway that wound through the rose gardens, reaching a high stone terrace that offered a breathtaking view of the city skyline below. The setting sun painted the sky in brilliant streaks of orange, pink, and gold.
Marissa leaned against the stone balustrade, taking a slow sip of wine, looking out over the city.
"A year ago," Marissa spoke softly, her eyes tracking the distant glass tower of Crown Plaza, "I was standing in the rain outside that department store carrying a cardboard box with twenty-three dollars to my name. I thought my life was over, Elias."
Elias set his wine glass on the stone wall. He turned to face her, taking both of her hands in his.
"Your life wasn't over, Marissa," Elias said gently. "It was just waiting for you to step into the light."
He looked into her dark eyes, his expression filled with a tenderness so profound it brought a lump to her throat.
"When I first met you," Elias continued, "I thought I was coming to thank a woman who saved my father's life. But over these last few months, I realized something far greater."
He slowly sank down onto one knee on the cool stone terrace.
Marissa gasped, covering her mouth with both hands, her eyes widening in shock and wonder.
Elias pulled a small, black velvet box from his coat pocket and pressed the latch. The lid flipped open to reveal a stunning, flawless emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the golden light of the setting sun, flashing with brilliant, fiery colors.
"Marissa Hale," Elias said, his deep voice trembling slightly with emotion. "You brought heart back into a home that was cold. You showed me what it means to be brave, to love fiercely, and to stand up for what matters. I don't want to live another day of my life without you and Toby."
Tears spilled over Marissa’s eyelashes, glowing like diamonds on her cheeks.
"Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?" Elias asked softly. "Will you let me love you, protect you, and walk beside you for the rest of our lives?"
Marissa looked down at the man who had picked her up when she was broken, who had fought her battles, protected her child, and given her a future beyond her wildest dreams.
"Yes," Marissa whispered, her voice overflowing with joy. "Yes, Elias! A thousand times yes!"
Elias stood up, slid the brilliant ring onto her finger, and pulled her into his arms. He lifted her off her feet, spinning her around on the stone terrace as their lips met in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their promise forever.
From the stone patio fifty yards away, Arthur and Toby let out a loud, unified cheer.
"She said yes!" Toby yelled, waving his red wooden airplane in the air.
Elias lowered Marissa back to her feet, his hands resting gently on her waist, his forehead pressed against hers as they both laughed through their tears.

"I love you, Marissa," Elias whispered against her lips.
"I love you, Elias," Marissa replied, wrapping her arms around his neck, holding him as tight as she could.
