Chapter 7 - The Shadow of the Past

The success of the Ward Community Health Foundation made national headlines over the next two months.

Marissa was featured on the cover of Business Weekly under the headline: THE CASHIER WHO SAVED A BILLIONAIRE AND TRANSFORMED CORPORATE CHARITY. Under her leadership, thirty-four low-income community centers were equipped with state-of-the-art emergency stations, and over two thousand retail workers received paid medical response training.

Her life with Toby was peaceful, filled with laughter, good food, and weekend trips to the park with Elias and Arthur. Toby had taken to Arthur instantly, calling him "Grandpa Art," while Elias had become a constant, protective presence in the boy's life, teaching him how to ride a bicycle without training wheels in the backyard.

On a warm Thursday afternoon, Marissa sat in her forty-fifth-floor office, reviewing the quarterly expansion reports.

Her phone buzzed on the mahogany desk.

It was an unknown number.

Marissa tapped the screen. "Marissa Hale."

A thick, raspy voice came through the speaker—a voice she hadn't heard in four years, a voice that instantly made her blood run cold.

"Hello, Marissa."

Marissa froze. Her breath caught in her throat. "Derek?"

Derek Hale. Her ex-husband. The man who had walked out on her and three-month-old Toby four years ago, leaving behind sixty thousand dollars in gambling debt, three signed eviction notices, and an empty bank account.

"I see you're doing real well for yourself, sweetheart," Derek slurred slightly over the line. "On the cover of magazines. Hanging out with billionaires in dark suits."

Marissa stood up from her desk, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the phone. "How did you get this number?"

"It’s not hard to track down a celebrity," Derek sneered. "I’m standing outside your fancy little building right now, Marissa. Looking at the big shiny Vanguard sign."

Panic, cold and sharp, cut through Marissa’s veins. "Derek, stay away from me. Stay away from my son."

"Our son," Derek corrected sharply. "He’s my kid too, Marissa. And now that you’re rolling in Ward family money, I think it’s about time we settled up my share of fatherhood."

"You abandoned him!" Marissa shouted, her voice trembling with rage. "You left us to starve! You don't have a share in anything!"

"The family court might see things differently when I file for joint custody," Derek said, his voice dropping into a dark, ugly threats. "Unless, of course, you want to make a private settlement. Say... five hundred thousand dollars? A drop in the bucket for your new billionaire boyfriend."

Marissa gripped the edge of her desk. "I won't give you a single penny."

"Then I'll see you in court, sweetheart," Derek sneered. "And I’ll make sure the newspapers get a full interview about how the great Marissa Hale abandoned her struggling husband to chase rich men."

The line went dead.

Marissa dropped the phone onto her desk, her hands trembling so violently she had to hold onto the leather chair to keep from falling.

The dark ghost of her past had returned, threatening to drag her back into the mud she had fought so hard to escape.

Ten minutes later, the glass door swept open.

Elias walked in, carrying a folder of financial updates. He took one look at Marissa’s pale, terrified face and immediately set the folder down, sprinting across the room to her side.

"Marissa! What happened?" Elias demanded, taking her cold hands in his. "Are you hurt?"

"He's back, Elias," Marissa sobbed, the tears she had been holding back finally spilling over. "Derek. My ex-husband. He... he called me. He’s downstairs. He wants money, or he’s going to take Toby away from me!"

Elias’s expression transformed in an instant.

The warm, gentle man vanished, replaced by a cold, terrifying force of nature. His dark gray eyes turned into shards of ice, his jaw setting so hard the muscles jumped beneath his skin.

"He's downstairs?" Elias asked, his voice deathly calm.

"Elias, please, don't go down there—" Marissa begged.

Elias pulled her into a tight, fierce hug, pressing his lips against her temple.

"Listen to me, Marissa," Elias whispered harshly into her hair. "Nobody touches your son. Nobody threatens your peace. I am going to handle this once and for all."

He let her go, turned on his heel, and strode out of the office, slamming the glass door behind him with a sound like thunder.
