Chapter 8 - The Clearing of the Debt

In the grand marble lobby of Vanguard Tower, Derek Hale stood near the security turnstiles, wearing a rumpled, stained leather jacket and faded jeans. He was chewing on a toothpick, looking around at the soaring glass ceilings with a mixture of envy and contempt.
Two security guards stood ten feet away, watching him closely.
The private executive elevator hissed open.
Elias Ward stepped out, flanked by his head of security, a massive former Special Forces operative named Vance, and his personal chief legal counsel, Sarah.
Derek straightened up, spitting his toothpick onto the polished marble floor as Elias approached.
"You must be the billionaire," Derek sneered, stepping forward with his hands in his pockets. "Elias Ward, right? Look, man, I don't want any trouble. I just want what's fair for my family—"
Elias didn't stop walking until he was standing six inches from Derek's face.
The sheer physical presence of Elias Ward—tall, broad-shouldered, impeccably dressed, radiating a terrifying, lethal authority—made Derek instinctively take a step backward.
"You are Derek Hale," Elias said. It wasn't a question. His voice was so low it vibrated in Derek's chest.
"Yeah, that's right," Derek stuttered, trying to maintain his tough front. "Marissa’s husband—"
"Former husband," Sarah, the legal advisor, corrected sharply, stepping forward with a thick black binder. "Divorce finalized in default three years ago following your desertion. Legal custody of Toby Hale granted exclusively to Marissa Hale."
"I have parental rights!" Derek yelled, looking around at the security guards. "You can't keep a father from his son!"
"You surrendered your parental rights forty-two months ago, Derek," Sarah said coldly, opening the binder. "Along with forty-eight unpaid child support payments totaling thirty-six thousand dollars."
"I was broke!" Derek shouted.
"You were gambling in Atlantic City," Elias interrupted, his voice dropping into a register that made Derek’s knees weaken. "While your wife worked double shifts at a department store to buy milk for your infant son."
Elias took a step closer, towering over Derek.
"You called Marissa ten minutes ago and threatened her," Elias said quietly. "You attempted to extort five hundred thousand dollars from her under the threat of public defamation and fraudulent custody litigation."
Derek swallowed hard, sweat suddenly breaking out across his forehead. "I... I was just talking. You can't prove that!"
Sarah pulled a silver recorder from her pocket and pressed play.
“Unless, of course, you want to make a private settlement. Say... five hundred thousand dollars? A drop in the bucket for your new billionaire boyfriend.”
Derek’s face drained of color. "You... you recorded me?!"
"Extortion of a corporate officer on Vanguard premises is a Class 2 federal felony, Mr. Hale," Sarah informed him smoothly. "And because you crossed state lines from New Jersey to come here today, it falls directly under federal jurisdiction."
Elias leaned down, his gray eyes locking onto Derek’s terrified gaze like steel traps.
"Here is what is going to happen, Derek," Elias whispered softly. "You are going to sign a formal, permanent termination of parental rights document prepared by my legal team. You will sign a full non-disclosure agreement. And then you will get on a bus, leave this city, and never come back."
"And if I don't?" Derek stammered, his voice trembling.
Elias gestured subtly to the head of security.
Two uniformed city detectives stepped out from behind the security desk, holding a pair of handcuffs.
"If you don't," Elias said, "Detective Miller will arrest you right now for felony extortion, criminal harassment, and three outstanding bench warrants for unpaid gambling debts in Nevada. You will spend the next seven years in a state penitentiary."
Derek looked at the handcuffs. He looked at the federal legal team. He looked at Elias Ward, who looked ready to snap him in half with his bare hands.
The illusion of Derek’s tough-guy persona shattered instantly.
"Give me the paper," Derek whispered pathetically.
Sarah handed him a gold pen and a document. Derek signed his name on the dotted line with trembling fingers, his hand shaking so badly the signature was barely legible.
Sarah took the document back, verified the signature, and nodded to Elias.
"Get out of my building," Elias told Derek flatly. "If I ever see your face within ten miles of Marissa or Toby again, I won't call the police. I will buy the debt company that owns your gambling markers and ruin your life until you have nowhere left to hide."
Derek turned on his heel and practically sprinted through the revolving glass doors out into the street, vanishing into the crowd like a rat scurrying into a gutter.

Elias stood in the grand marble lobby, watching the doors close. He adjusted his suit cuffs, took a deep breath, and turned back toward the executive elevator.
It was time to go back upstairs to the woman he loved.
