Chapter 9 - The Final Verdict

One month later.
The Federal District Courthouse in downtown Chicago was packed to absolute capacity. Media crews from across the country filled the marble corridors outside Courtroom 402, waiting for the final sentencing in the Whitmore embezzlement and conspiracy trial.
Inside the silent courtroom, Douglas and Vanessa Whitmore sat at the defense table in bright orange prison jumpsuits, their hands chained to their waists. They looked broken, defeated, and stripped of every ounce of prestige they had once possessed.
Sitting on the front bench of the prosecution gallery were Maya and Arthur, holding hands tightly under the wooden railing. Beside them sat Prosecutor Sarah Jenkins, sorting through her final legal files.
The judge—a stern, grey-haired woman with a reputation for absolute severity—gavelled the court to order.
"In the matter of the United States versus Douglas Whitmore and Vanessa Whitmore," the judge announced, her voice echoing through the silent room. "The court has reviewed the overwhelming evidence of financial fraud, public corruption, and the calculated, malicious attempted murder of Maya Vance."
Vanessa lowered her head, weeping silently, while Douglas stared blankly at the floor.
"It is the finding of this court," the judge continued, her gaze cold as ice, "that the actions of the defendants represent the highest degree of human greed and moral bankruptcy. Therefore, on the counts of wire fraud and racketeering, Douglas Whitmore is sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole."
A gasp swept through the gallery.
"And on the counts of conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder," the judge turned her stern gaze onto Vanessa, "Vanessa Whitmore is sentenced to thirty-five years at the Federal Correctional Institution in Hazelton."
BANG!
The gavel struck the wooden block with a loud, absolute thud that signaled the final, total end of their reign of terror.
As federal marshals stepped forward to drag the weeping Vanessa and the broken Douglas out through the side door, Vanessa turned to look at Maya one last time.
Maya did not look away. She sat straight, her head held high, standing beside Arthur Whitmore, surrounded by dignity, truth, and love.
As the courtroom cleared, Arthur turned to Maya, holding both of her hands in his.
"It's finished," Arthur said gently. "The foundation is clean, the hospital is safe, and those who tried to hurt you will never see the light of day again."
Maya looked into his clear grey eyes, a deep, radiant smile spreading across her face. "Thank you, Arthur. For everything."
"There is one last thing we need to take care of," Arthur said, a rare, nervous smile touching his lips.

"What's that?" Maya asked, tilting her head.
Arthur reached into his suit jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-covered box.
