Chapter 8 - Night at the Drake

On Thursday evening, a heavy autumn rain swept across Lake Michigan, beating against the grand glass windows of the Drake Hotel on Chicago's Gold Coast.

The hotel was a masterpiece of old-world luxury, filled with crystal chandeliers, velvet draperies, and grand marble archways. For the private charity dinner, the second-floor Venetian Room had been reserved, lit by low candle lights and filled with elegant floral arrangements.

Outside, in an unmarked surveillance van parked three blocks away, Arthur sat before six high-definition monitor feeds, wearing a tactical headset. Dominic sat beside him, coordinating eighteen concealed FBI agents and twelve private Kade security operatives spread throughout the hotel staff.

"Target entry confirmed," Dominic announced, pointing at Screen 3.

A tall man wearing a tailor-made suit and holding a leather briefcase stepped out of the hotel elevator on the second floor. It was Viktor Kozlov—a former Eastern European operative turned high-priced enforcement contractor. Behind him came two men carrying heavy duffel bags disguised as catering supplies.

"They're moving toward the service pantry behind the Venetian Room," Dominic reported into his microphone. "FBI units 1 and 2, fall into secondary pursuit."

Inside the Venetian Room, Maya stood near the central podium, wearing a breathtaking deep blue silk evening gown. Her dark hair was styled in an elegant updo, exposing her graceful neck. She held a glass of sparkling water in her hand, her posture composed, though her pulse was racing like a war drum against her ribs.

She saw the service pantry door swing open slightly out of the corner of her eye.

Kozlov stepped into the shadowed hallway behind the banquet hall, pulling a suppressed pistol from beneath his jacket while his associate set up an incendiary device designed to trigger a sudden electrical fire in the room's main wiring panel.

"Moving to target," Kozlov whispered into his lapel microphone.

He reached out his gloved hand to turn the handle of the service door leading directly to where Maya stood.

BOOM!

The heavy service door was kicked inward with catastrophic force, striking Kozlov square in the chest and throwing him backward onto the tile floor.

Before his associates could pull their weapons, eight FBI tactical operatives in full body armor burst through the pantry doors, their assault rifles raised, green laser sights painting the darkness.

"FBI! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DOWN ON THE GROUND NOW!"

Kozlov, sprawling on the floor, rolled to his side and reached for his fallen pistol.

TAT-TAT!

Two suppressed shots echoed through the narrow pantry service hall as Dominic, stepping through the side entrance with terrifying speed, put two rounds precisely into Kozlov’s shoulder and thigh, neutralizing him instantly.

The two remaining operatives threw their hands into the air, falling to their knees as the FBI team swarmed over them, snapping plastic flex-cuffs around their wrists.

Inside the Venetian Room, Arthur burst through the double doors, his face wild with raw, instinctual concern.

He bypassed the panicking guests, stepping straight up to Maya, pulling her into his arms with a fierce, desperate strength.

"It's over," Arthur breathed into her hair, his heart pounding violently against her chest. "They're secured. It's completely over."

May you like

Maya buried her face against his neck, inhaling the familiar, comforting scent of cedar and rain, letting out a long, shuddering breath of pure, total relief.

"I told you," Maya whispered, tears of joy filling her eyes as she looked up at him. "I knew you wouldn't let them touch me."
