Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

While the Whitmore Foundation was undergoing its grand rebirth, the desperate remnants of Douglas Whitmore’s old network were refusing to go quietly into the night.
In a high-security detention facility outside Chicago, Vanessa Whitmore sat across from a shady, high-priced defense attorney named Marcus Sterling.
Vanessa’s once-pristine appearance was completely gone. She wore an orange jumpsuit, her dark hair pulled back into a messy ponytail, her eyes burning with a bitter, toxic obsession.
"There has to be a way out, Marcus," Vanessa hissed, slamming her hands against the acrylic glass partition. "My father’s heart condition is worsening in the medical wing. If we go to trial, we’re facing twenty years!"
Sterling leaned forward, his voice a barely audible whisper. "The federal prosecutors have a ironclad case, Vanessa. The paper trail Arthur turned over is flawless. The only way to break the prosecution’s case is to invalidate the primary witness."
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure malice. "Maya."
"She’s the one who found the ledger," Sterling noted. "She’s the one whose medical records provide the felony count of attempted murder that keeps you locked up without bail. If her credibility is destroyed—or if she is unavailable to testify when the grand jury re-convenes next month—the prosecution’s timeline collapses."
Vanessa leaned closer to the glass, her voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "What about the offshore account in Nassau? The one my father set up that Arthur’s forensic accountants didn't find?"
Sterling’s eyebrows raised slightly. "How much is in it?"
"One point five million," Vanessa revealed. "It was meant for my offshore trust. If you can get in touch with Viktor Kozlov... tell him the Nassau account is his if he makes sure Maya never steps foot in that courtroom."
Sterling stayed quiet for three seconds, assessing the risk, before slowly nodding his head. "I will make the call tonight."
Three hundred miles away, at the Whitmore estate, the sun was setting behind the pine trees, painting the autumn sky in brilliant shades of crimson and gold.
Maya and Arthur were walking along the stone path near the south garden, where new rose bushes were being planted for the upcoming spring season. Lily was running ahead of them with Arthur’s golden retriever, her laughter ringing out through the quiet evening air.
"She’s happy here," Maya said softly, watching her daughter throw a tennis ball across the lawn.
"This estate was too quiet for too long, Maya," Arthur replied, walking beside her, his hand lightly brushing against hers as they walked. "For ten years after my father died, this house felt like a museum. A place to store memories instead of making new ones."
He stopped walking, turning to face her under the wooden pergola wrapped in fading summer vines.
"You and Lily brought life back into these walls," Arthur said gently, reaching out to take her bandaged hand in his warm, strong grip. "I don't think I’ve thanked you properly for that."
Maya looked down at their joined hands, feeling a deep, comforting warmth spread through her chest. "Arthur... when I was trapped in that freezer, I thought my life was over. I thought Lily would be left alone in the world with nobody to protect her."
She looked up into his grey eyes, her voice trembling slightly with emotion. "You didn't just save my life that night. You gave us a future."
Arthur stepped closer, his fingers gently lifting her chin so she was looking directly into his eyes.
"I will spend the rest of my life making sure that future is safe, Maya," Arthur whispered, his face inches from hers. "I promise you."
Before their lips could meet, the sharp, urgent sound of a security radio cut through the quiet evening.
Dominic came trotting down the stone path from the mansion, his face dark with concern, holding a satellite phone in his hand.
"Boss," Dominic said, stopping a few feet away. "We have an intercept from federal wiretaps."
Arthur immediately stepped back, his protective demeanor instantly switching back into high alert. "What is it?"
May you like
"Vanessa’s attorney made contact with Viktor Kozlov’s organization in Miami an hour ago," Dominic revealed, his eyes flickering toward Maya with deep concern. "A wire transfer was just initiated from an unmapped account in Nassau."
Arthur’s jaw set into stone. "They’re putting a hit on Maya."
