Chapter 8 - Wrath of the Guardian

What followed was not a battle; it was an absolute execution of military precision and unbridled fury.

Jaxson fired three rapid shots, dropping the two men holding the hydraulic ram before they could even draw their weapons. He moved like a phantom through the smoke, his eyes fixed on the man holding Della.

"Shoot him! Shoot him!" the lead attacker screamed, desperately raising his assault rifle.

Jaxson ducked beneath the burst of gunfire, closing the distance in a fraction of a second. He grabbed the barrel of the rifle, twisting it violently to snap the attacker's wrist, then drove a heavy combat knife directly into the man's vest plate, throwing him over the bridge railing into the icy waters below.

The remaining attacker grabbed Della, pulling a hand grenade from his vest and pulling the pin with his teeth.

"Stay back, Thorne!" the man screamed hysterically. "I'll blow us all to hell!"

Della looked at Jaxson, her eyes filled with tears, her body shaking uncontrollably. "Jaxson..."

Jaxson stopped five feet away. His expression was unnervingly calm, his breathing steady, but the dark energy radiating from him was terrifying.

"You have three seconds to let her go," Jaxson said, his voice terrifyingly quiet.

"Go to hell!" the man yelled.

Before the man's fingers could release the lever of the grenade, a high-caliber sniper round shot from the hovering helicopter shattered the man's shoulder.

The man screamed, dropping the grenade onto the asphalt.

In the blink of an eye, Jaxson lunged forward. With one arm, he scooped Della up into his chest, shielding her entire body with his back and heavy kevlar coat. With his other foot, he kicked the live grenade off the edge of the bridge.

BOOM!

The explosion erupted in mid-air over the river below, sending a plume of water and smoke into the sky.

Silence fell over the bridge once more.

Jaxson remained on one knee, holding Della tightly against his chest, his arms wrapped around her like an impenetrable shield of steel.

"Della... Della, look at me," Jaxson whispered urgently, his hand gently framing her face. "Are you hurt? Did they touch you?"

Della buried her face into the crook of his neck, sobbing uncontrollably, her hands clutching his tactical vest. "Jaxson... you came... you came for us..."

"Always," Jaxson murmured, kissing her forehead softly, his eyes burning with intense emotion. "I will always come for you."

Behind them, Jaxson’s tactical team descended from the helicopter, securing the bridge and rounding up the surviving attackers. Marcus walked up to Jaxson, holding a encrypted phone.

"Boss," Marcus reported grimly. "We traced the boat. It belongs to Victor Rossi. And Arthur Vance was spotted at Rossi's dock ten minutes ago."

Jaxson slowly stood up, holding Della securely in his arms. He looked down at Marcus, his gray eyes turning into abyssal darkness.

"End them," Jaxson commanded coldly. "Tonight. Leave no trace of Rossi or the Vances in this city."
