Chapter 5 - The Fortress in Polanco

The Polanco penthouse was less of a home and more of a military bunker disguised as luxury real estate. Spanning the top three floors of a steel-and-glass tower, it gave Alejandro total control over the environment.

For the first forty-eight hours, Valeria did nothing but sleep and heal. The private medical team worked around the clock, administering localized treatments to her chemical burns and monitoring the baby’s heart rate.

On the third morning, the steady, rhythmic thump-thump-thump of the fetal monitor filled the master bedroom. Valeria sat up in bed, a faint touch of color returning to her cheeks. She watched Alejandro, who hadn't slept in three days. He was surrounded by three separate laptops, a secure satellite phone, and hundreds of financial ledgers.

"Alejandro," she called out softly.

He immediately dropped what he was doing and rushed to her side, kissing her forehead. "How do you feel? Is the pain gone?"

"The medicine is helping," she said, her fingers tracing the bandages on her wrists. "But you... you look like a ghost. What is happening outside?"

Alejandro sat on the edge of the bed, his face grim. "Mother went to the board of directors, just as Marcela said. She produced a forged medical document claiming you are suffering from severe prenatal schizophrenia and that I am acting under duress. She’s trying to invoke a clause in the corporate bylaws to declare me temporarily incapacitated."

Valeria’s breath hitched. "Can she do that?"

"If the board votes with her, yes. She only needs a sixty percent majority to force a temporary administrative freeze," Alejandro explained. "And unfortunately, many of the older board members are old friends of my father who still view Mother as the true matriarch of the family."

"Then let them have it," Valeria whispered, gripping his hand tightly. "Let them take the company, Alejandro. We have enough money. We can leave Mexico. We can go to Europe, raise our child in peace, away from this horror."

Alejandro looked at her, his eyes softening with deep devotion, but beneath that softness was an unshakeable resolve. "No, Valeria. If we run, they win. They will spend the rest of our lives chasing us, using their wealth to hunt us down, trying to invalidate our child’s legitimacy. They violated you. They tried to murder our baby's future. I am not going to run from them. I am going to strip them of everything that gives them power."

He opened one of the laptops, turning the screen toward her. It showed a complex web of corporate entities registered in Delaware, Luxembourg, and the Cayman Islands.

"What is this?" she asked.

"My father wasn't just a businessman; he was a cautious man," Alejandro said. "He knew my mother’s greed would eventually destroy the family. Before he died, he gave me a secondary ledger—a decryption key to a hidden set of accounts within the Aranda Legacy Trust. For the past two days, my forensic accountants have been digging through them."

He clicked a file, opening a series of digitized documents bearing Doña Esther’s elegant signature.

"For fifteen years, Mother and Marcela have been using a shell company called 'Aura Aesthetics' to launder money out of the real estate empire's construction funds," Alejandro revealed, a cold smile touching his lips. "But it’s worse than simple theft. They weren't just stealing money for clothes and jewelry. They were paying off government inspectors to look the other way on sub-standard concrete and structural materials used in our low-income housing developments in East Mexico City."

Valeria gasped, her art conservator’s mind immediately understanding the implications. "Sub-standard materials? Alejandro... if those buildings fail..."

"They already are," Alejandro said. "There are three apartment complexes built two years ago that are already showing severe structural degradation. Mother has been paying millions in bribes to keep the structural reports buried. If this goes public, it won't just destroy her reputation; she will face twenty years in a federal penitentiary for corporate manslaughter and corruption."

Suddenly, Carlos entered the room, his expression tense. "Sir, we have a problem. Doña Esther’s lawyers just arrived at the tower lobby. They have a police escort, and they are bearing a court order signed by a family judge."

Alejandro closed the laptop. "What kind of order?"

"An order for the immediate protective custody of Valeria Aranda, alleging that you are holding her hostage against her will."
