Chapter 7 - The Sledgehammer of Evidence

The word sister fell into the boardroom like a heavy iron weight. Andrew’s jaw dropped, his eyes darting frantically between Claire’s steady gaze and Dante Moretti’s terrifyingly calm face. He searched for the lie, searched for the mistake, but the two of them stood together with a structural symmetry that looked entirely too real.
"Sister?" Andrew stammered, his face turning an unwholesome shade of grey. "That’s... that’s impossible. Her father was Thomas Foster. He didn't have any connection to—"
"Thomas Foster was my godfather, Andrew," Dante interrupted, stepping closer until he was towering over the desk. "He took care of me when the streets were on fire. And when he died, I promised him that if anyone ever brought rain into his daughter’s life, I would bring the storm. You’ve been very rainy, Andrew."
Dante signaled to Marcus, who walked in carrying a heavy leather briefcase. He opened it on the white quartz table, pulling out twelve identical blue folders and sliding them in front of each trustee.
"Inside those folders," Dante said, his voice dropping into that quiet, absolute register, "is the complete forensic audit of the Whitmore Foundation, prepared by the internal revenue compliance division of Moretti Holdings. It details every dollar your chairman has stolen, every container he’s moved, and the exact offshore accounts where the money is currently sitting."
Judge Harrison opened his folder, his eyes scanning the first page before he closed it with a heavy sigh. He looked up at Andrew with an expression of pure disgust. "Andrew, you are stripped of your chairmanship effective immediately. This board will cooperate fully with the authorities. If you have any sense left, you will call your defense counsel before the federal marshals arrive at the elevators."
"Harrison, wait!" Andrew cried out, his hands shaking as he reached for the folder. "We can restructure! We can settle this out of court! The foundation’s reputation—"
"The foundation’s reputation is fine, Andrew," Claire said, stepping up to the head of the table where his digital presentation was still running. She pressed a single button on the control panel, turning the screen off. "Because as of five minutes ago, Moretti Holdings has purchased the entirety of the foundation’s debt. The charity will continue to run, the sick children will still get their medicine, but your name is being taken off the front door."
Elise Vaughn didn't wait for the meeting to adjourn. She grabbed her designer bag, her face white with panic, and tried to slip past the two guards at the door. One of them simply stepped into her path, his arms crossed over his chest like an iron wall.
"You’re going to want to stay for the final vote, Ms. Vaughn," Dante said, not even looking at her. "The state’s attorney has a very long list of questions regarding your signature on the Gold Coast lease."

Andrew collapsed into his leather chair, his hands covering his face as the reality of his ruin finally crashed through his defenses. He had spent his whole life building a fortress out of lies, believing that a dry-cleaner’s daughter was too weak to ever pull the thread. But he hadn't just lied to a quiet woman; he had stolen from the capital of the shadow city.
Dante turned to Claire, his face relaxing into an expression of quiet respect. "The car is downstairs, Claire. Noah is waiting. It’s time to go home."
