Chapter 4 - The Shadow Capital

The private dining room at Marello’s was empty at seven in the morning, save for a single waiter polishing wine glasses near the bar. The crystal chandeliers were turned off, leaving the space illuminated only by the gray, wet light coming through the high arched windows facing the river.

Claire walked into the restaurant, her boots clicking softly against the black marble floor. She felt exposed without her makeup, her hair pulled back into a simple knot, her trench coat damp from the rain. Noah was downstairs in Marcus’s car, protected by two men who looked like they hadn't smiled since 2010.

At Table Seven, a man was sitting alone, a single cup of black espresso resting on the white cloth in front of him.

Dante Moretti looked exactly like the rumors described: thirty-seven years old, with hair like midnight and a face that seemed carved from a block of granite. He wore a dark charcoal suit that cost more than Claire’s entire wedding budget, his sleeves rolled back once to reveal a faint, jagged scar crossing his inner wrist.

He didn't stand up when she approached. He simply lifted his dark eyes, measuring her with a cold, absolute intensity that made her breath hitch.

"Sit down, Claire," Dante said, his voice a low baritone that carried the weight of a court verdict.

Claire sat across from him, her hands folded tightly in her lap. "You’re the one who gave Marcus the ledger."

"Marcus is an employee of my logistics division," Dante said, taking a slow sip of his espresso. "Your husband has been using my shipping lines to move unregistered medical supplies through the children’s foundation. He told my people the cargo was penicillin for the pediatric clinics in the West Side. It wasn't."

Claire’s throat tightened. "What was it?"

"Fentanyl precursors," Dante said flatly, his face completely unbothered by the horror of the word. "He’s been using the charity’s tax-exempt status to import chemical shipments from Shanghai, routing them through my docks, and then distributing them to a cartel proxy called the Falco syndicate. He’s making twelve million a quarter on the side, while his wife wears navy satin and smiles for the newspapers."

Claire felt a cold wave of sickness wash over her. She thought Andrew was just a liar and a cheat. She thought he was a man who didn't love her anymore. She had no idea she had been sharing a bed with a monster who was fueling the city’s worst nightmare under the banner of sick children.

"I didn't know," Claire whispered, her voice cracking. "I swear to you, Mr. Moretti, I had no idea about the shipping containers. I only found out about the money last night."

"I know you didn't know," Dante said, leaning forward, his large hands resting flat on the white table. "If you knew, you wouldn't have used your personal signature on the Q2 vendor clearance forms. Andrew used your name as the primary compliance officer on the shell accounts. If the federal marshals raid that foundation tomorrow, you’re the one who goes to the women’s facility in Pekin for fifteen years. Andrew walks away with a deferred prosecution agreement because his partner is the state’s attorney."

Claire stared at him, her heart stopping completely. The paper trail. The compliance forms she had signed at the kitchen island between helping Noah with his fifth-grade history homework. Andrew hadn't just cheated on her; he had set her up to be his human shield.

"Why are you telling me this?" Claire asked, her eyes wide with terror. "If you’re the mafia boss everyone is afraid of, why don't you just kill him?"

Dante’s mouth curved into a microscopic, lethal smile. "Killing a man like Andrew Whitmore makes him a martyr. The city names a wing of the hospital after him, and his foundation continues to run under his board of directors. I don't want him dead, Claire. I want him ruined. I want his name stripped off every building in Chicago. And for that, I need his wife."

He pushed a small, encrypted flash drive across the table. It landed with a soft clink against her silver wedding ring.

"Inside that drive is the secondary routing code for the Halcyon accounts," Dante said. "Andrew is hosting a closed-door board meeting at the foundation headquarters at four o'clock today. He’s going to announce your 'temporary medical leave' due to emotional instability. You’re going to walk into that room, Claire. And you’re going to call me your brother."
