Chapter 3 - The Forty-Eighth Floor

Claire didn't move away from the desk. She leaned against the heavy mahogany wood, her phone hidden inside the palm of her hand, tucked against her thigh. The darkness of the room worked in her favor, hiding the rapid rise and fall of her chest.

"I came looking for Noah’s medical file," Claire said, her voice remarkably cool. "The pediatrician asked for his historical immunization records for the school camp next week. I thought you kept them in here."

Andrew walked into the room, his eyes scanning her posture, his gaze dropping to her empty hands before shifting to the desk drawers. He didn't believe her—he didn't believe anyone by nature—but the excuse was ordinary enough to delay his reaction.

"The files are in the digital portal, Claire. You know that," he said, stepping close enough that she could smell the expensive bourbon on his breath. He reached out, his hand wrapping around her upper arm with a grip that was entirely too firm. "You don't enter this room without my permission. Ever. I have corporate litigation documents in here that could ruin this family if they were misplaced by someone who doesn't understand the law."

"I understand the law perfectly, Andrew," she said, gently but firmly pulling her arm out of his grasp. She stepped past him, her bare feet silent on the Persian rug. "And I understand when a room is too dirty to stay in."

Andrew let out a sharp, mocking laugh behind her. "You’ve been acting like a martyr all evening. If you think that little display at the gala is going to change anything, you’re mistaken. Elise is a major donor’s daughter. She is essential to the Q3 expansion. Your jealousy is becoming a liability to my career."

Claire stopped at the threshold of the door, turning her head to look at him over her shoulder. "My jealousy didn't buy a room at the Halcyon Grand on February twelfth, Andrew. Your foundation’s donor fund did."

The silence that followed was absolute.

Andrew’s face didn't go pale; it went entirely rigid, the handsome features petrifying into a mask of cold stone. The arrogant smirk vanished from his lips, replaced by a thin, dangerous line. He didn't deny it. He didn't shout. He simply watched her walk out of the room, his mind already shifting into survival mode.

By morning, Claire knew the locks on the house would be changed. Her credit cards would be flagged. Andrew would use every legal asset at his disposal to paint her as an unstable, vengeful wife trying to destroy a charitable institution. She had seen him do it to former business partners; she knew the script by heart.

She packed a single suitcase for herself and Noah while the sun was still a gray smudge on the horizon. By 6:00 AM, she was driving toward downtown Chicago, Noah sitting in the passenger seat, his eyes glued to his tablet, completely unaware that his life had just been split in two.

She didn't go to a hotel. Andrew owned or had connections to every luxury hotel chain in the loop. Instead, she drove to the South Side, pulling up outside an old, industrial warehouse building that had been converted into a commercial laundry and shipping facility.

The forty-eighth floor of the downtown office complex was where the real power sat, but the roots of that power were down here, in the grease and the smoke.

She took the service elevator to the third floor, entering a small, cluttered office where a man named Marcus Vance was sorting through shipping manifests. Marcus was fifty, with a face like a weathered boot and a permanent ink stain on his right thumb. He was the one who had sent her the texts last night.

"You’re early, Mrs. Whitmore," Marcus said, not looking up from his ledger.

"He knows I know, Marcus," Claire said, setting her suitcase down. "He’s going to freeze the accounts by noon. I need the full Q1 ledger before his lawyers file the injunction."

Marcus finally looked up, his grey eyes cutting over her face. "I don't work for your husband, lady. I work for the people who actually own those trucks. And right now, the man who owns those trucks wants to see you."

May you like

"Who owns them?" Claire asked.

Marcus stood up, locking his desk drawer. "Dante Moretti. He’s waiting for you at the restaurant. Table Seven."
