Chapter 4 – Safe House

The convoy left Seattle just after midnight.
Rain had returned, washing the highways in silver as three black SUVs moved through the darkness without attracting attention. Their headlights remained dim, and each vehicle changed lanes with practiced precision.
Emma sat in the back seat beside her father, David Carter.
He had insisted on coming after Daniel explained, in careful but incomplete terms, that Emma was no longer safe at home.
David glanced at the armed men in the vehicles ahead.
"I've lived sixty years," he said quietly, "and I never imagined I'd need an escort just to leave my neighborhood."
Emma forced a small smile.
"I'm sorry, Dad."
He gently squeezed her uninjured hand.
"You have nothing to apologize for."
Across from them, Daniel Kim remained silent, his attention fixed on the road outside.
He wasn't watching the rain.
He was watching every vehicle that appeared in it.
Nearly two hours later, the convoy turned onto a narrow mountain road hidden behind towering evergreens.
Emma expected another mansion.
Instead, they stopped outside a quiet lakeside estate surrounded by dense forest.
The property looked ordinary.
That was precisely why it had been chosen.
"There are only three roads leading here," Kang explained as everyone stepped out of the vehicles.
"They're monitored twenty-four hours a day."
Emma looked around.
"No neighbors?"
Daniel answered.
"None close enough to become targets."
The words settled heavily over the group.
Targets.
She was beginning to understand that this had become her life.
Inside, the house was warm.
A fire burned in the stone fireplace.
Fresh food had already been prepared.
Medical supplies occupied one corner of the living room.
Emma frowned.
"You planned this."
Daniel nodded.
"I plan for many possibilities."
"You expected another attack."
"I hoped I was wrong."
Hana raced downstairs the moment she heard the front door.
"Emma!"
She stopped only after remembering Emma's injured shoulder.
Instead of hugging her tightly, she wrapped her little arms around Emma's waist as gently as she could.
"I missed you."
Emma smiled.
"I missed you too."
Daniel watched the scene from across the room.
For weeks after her mother's death, Hana had barely spoken to anyone.
Now she laughed again.
Because of Emma.
It was a debt Daniel believed could never truly be repaid.
The first peaceful morning arrived with birdsong instead of sirens.
Emma walked onto the porch carrying a mug of coffee.
The lake reflected the sunrise like polished glass.
For the first time since the shooting...
She breathed.
Behind her, Daniel stepped outside.
"I was hoping you'd sleep longer."
"I've never been good at sleeping."
He nodded.
"Neither have I."
For several moments they stood in comfortable silence.
Finally Emma asked the question that had been growing in her mind.
"What really happened to Hana's mother?"
Daniel's expression changed almost imperceptibly.
"She died eight years ago."
"An accident?"
He looked toward the lake.
"No."
Another pause.
"Someone wanted to hurt me."
Emma lowered her eyes.
"They used the person you loved most."
Daniel didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
Later that afternoon, Kang interrupted the quiet.
He entered the living room carrying a tablet.
"We found something."
Daniel stood immediately.
The security footage from the hospital appeared on the screen.
The fake janitor had entered the building alone.
But he hadn't left alone.
Another person had walked beside him.
A nurse.
Her face remained partially hidden beneath a surgical mask.
Kang enlarged the image.
"Facial recognition finally produced a match."
A file opened.
Sophia Lee.
Former trauma nurse.
Missing for three years.
Last known employer...
One of Daniel's own medical charities.
Emma frowned.
"She worked for you?"
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Yes."
Kang looked up.
"She disappeared after transferring money from one of our foundations."
"You think she's involved?"
"I think someone recruited her long before the attack."
Daniel stared at the photograph.
"The leak started years ago."
That evening...
The security team rotated shifts around the estate.
Everything appeared normal.
Too normal.
One guard scanned the tree line through binoculars.
Nothing.
Another checked the surveillance monitors.
Nothing.
Kang remained unconvinced.
"Increase the patrols."
One of the younger guards looked confused.
"We haven't seen anyone."
"Exactly."
Less than a mile away...
Hidden among the trees...
A man lowered a high-powered camera.
He wasn't carrying a rifle.
He wasn't there to kill anyone.
He was there to confirm one thing.
Emma Carter was inside.
He pressed a button on a secure satellite phone.
"The bird is in the nest."
A distorted voice answered.
"And Daniel?"
"Also inside."
There was a brief silence.
Then the voice spoke again.
"Good."
"The second phase begins tonight."
Back at the estate...
Emma helped Hana finish a jigsaw puzzle on the living room floor while David chatted with the housekeeper in the kitchen.
For the first time in days, laughter filled the house.
Daniel watched from the doorway.
He almost allowed himself to believe they had found a moment of peace.
Then—
Every light in the house went out.
Darkness swallowed the rooms.
The backup generator failed to start.
Kang's voice echoed sharply through the hallway.
"Protect Hana!"
At the exact same moment...
A distant explosion shook the mountains.
The security gate had been destroyed.
Daniel pulled Hana behind him.
Emma instinctively stepped toward David.
Outside...
Engines roared through the forest.
Multiple vehicles.
Coming fast.
Daniel looked toward the shattered darkness beyond the windows.
His expression became cold, focused, and utterly fearless.
"They've found us."
And somewhere beyond the trees, hidden in
May you like

the night, an unseen enemy watched the estate through a sniper's scope...
...waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
