Chapter 2 – A Debt That Could Never Be Repaid

The ambulance doors slammed shut.
Emma Carter lay on the narrow stretcher, her vision swimming beneath the harsh white lights mounted on the ceiling. Every bump in the road sent another wave of pain through her shoulder where the bullet had torn across the muscle.
"It went straight through," one paramedic said while pressing fresh gauze against the wound. "She's lucky."
Lucky.
Emma almost laughed.
She had been shot.
Her café was destroyed.
She had no idea whether she still had a job.
And somewhere in the city, armed men knew exactly what she looked like.
That hardly felt like luck.
Outside the ambulance, three black SUVs followed in perfect formation.
The paramedic glanced through the rear window.
"Who are those people?"
His partner shook his head.
"I don't know, but they've been behind us since we left."
Neither of them realized the convoy belonged to one of the most powerful criminal organizations on the West Coast.
Daniel Kim sat alone in the middle SUV.
Rain streaked across the tinted windows.
Across from him sat his chief of security, Kang Min-jae, a former special forces officer who had protected Daniel for nearly fifteen years.
"The girl?" Daniel asked quietly.
"Doctors say she'll recover."
"And Hana?"
"Not a scratch."
Daniel closed his eyes for a brief moment.
That answer should have brought relief.
Instead, guilt settled heavily in his chest.
Someone had known Hana's route.
Someone had known exactly when she would stop at the café.
This hadn't been random.
Someone close to him had leaked the information.
Meanwhile...
Hana sat wrapped in a blanket inside another SUV.
She refused to let go of Emma's bloodstained apron, despite repeated attempts to take it away.
"I want to see her."
"You will," one of the women assigned to protect her replied gently.
"Promise?"
"I promise."
Hana looked out at the rain.
"If Emma hadn't pushed me..."
She couldn't finish the sentence.
At Harbor Medical Center...
Emma woke several hours later.
The room was quiet except for the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor.
Her shoulder throbbed.
She tried to sit up.
A nurse immediately noticed.
"Easy."
"What time is it?"
"Almost nine."
Emma's eyes widened.
"My father."
She reached frantically for her phone.
"It's broken," the nurse explained.
"It was damaged during the shooting."
Emma's heart sank.
"He'll think something happened."
Before she could panic further, the room's door opened.
A man in a perfectly tailored dark suit entered carrying a brand-new phone.
Daniel Kim.
Without his rain-soaked coat, he appeared even more composed.
Elegant.
Controlled.
Dangerously calm.
He placed the phone beside her bed.
"We contacted your father."
Emma stared.
"You... what?"
"He knows you're safe."
"You spoke to him?"
Daniel nodded once.
"He believes you were injured during an armed robbery."
Emma exhaled in relief.
"Thank you."
Silence settled between them.
Daniel wasn't accustomed to thanking people.
People usually thanked him.
Feared him.
Avoided him.
But this young woman looked at him with neither fear nor admiration.
Only confusion.
Finally, she asked the obvious question.
"Who are you?"
Daniel considered the question carefully.
"A businessman."
Emma raised an eyebrow.
"A businessman whose employees carry assault rifles?"
Daniel almost smiled.
"Something like that."
A knock interrupted them.
Kang entered.
His expression remained perfectly neutral, but Daniel immediately recognized the urgency behind it.
"We found one alive."
Daniel stood.
"Where?"
"The warehouse."
"I'll be there."
Emma watched them exchange a look she couldn't understand.
As Daniel turned to leave, she spoke.
"Wait."
He stopped.
"The little girl..."
"Hana."
"Is she okay?"
Daniel looked at Emma for several seconds before answering.
"Because of you."
Then he walked out.
Forty minutes later...
An abandoned shipping warehouse near the harbor.
Rainwater dripped through holes in the rusted roof.
A masked attacker knelt on the concrete floor, hands bound behind his back.
His face was bruised.
One eye swollen shut.
Daniel entered without speaking.
Every guard stepped aside immediately.
The prisoner looked up.
"So..."
he laughed bitterly,
"the great Daniel Kim finally came himself."
Daniel remained silent.
Silence was far more frightening than shouting.
The prisoner smirked.
"You've already lost."
Daniel crouched until they were eye level.
"Who hired you?"
"No idea."
A lie.
Daniel could hear it instantly.
The prisoner grinned through bloody teeth.
"You think killing me changes anything?"
"No."
Daniel answered calmly.
"I think telling me the truth might."
The man laughed again.
"You'll never find the traitor."
For the first time...
Daniel's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough for Kang to notice.
Traitor.
Not attackers.
Not enemies.
Someone inside.
Before Daniel could ask another question—
The prisoner's body jerked violently.
Blood appeared across his chest.
A tiny red hole.
Then another.
Then another.
Sniper fire.
The warehouse erupted into chaos.
"Sniper!"
Guards rushed toward Daniel.
Concrete exploded as bullets struck the walls.
Kang shoved Daniel behind a steel support beam.
"The roof!"
Several gunmen returned fire toward a distant building.
Within seconds...
The sniper disappeared.
Leaving only silence.
And a dead prisoner.
Daniel stared at the body.
Their only lead...
gone.
Back at the hospital...
Emma couldn't sleep.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw shattered glass.
Gunfire.
The terrified expression on Hana's face.
A soft knock came at midnight.
Emma expected another nurse.
Instead...
A tiny figure wearing oversized hospital slippers peeked around the doorway.
Hana.
She held a small stuffed rabbit beneath one arm.
"You shouldn't be awake," Emma whispered.
Hana nodded.
"I know."
"But I wanted to say thank you."
Emma smiled gently.
"You don't have to thank me."
"I do."
The little girl climbed carefully onto the chair beside the bed.
"My mom died when I was little."
Emma's smile faded.
"Dad says brave people protect others."
She looked up with watery eyes.
"Today... you protected me."
Emma reached over with her uninjured hand and squeezed Hana's gently.
"I was scared."
"So was I."
"You were?"
Emma laughed softly.
"Very."
Hana blinked.
"But you still came."
"Sometimes..."
Emma said quietly,
"...being brave doesn't mean you're not afraid."
"It means someone else needs you more than your fear."
Hana thought about those words for a long time.
Finally...
she leaned forward and hugged Emma as carefully as possible.
At that exact moment—
Daniel stood silently outside the half-open door.
He had come to bring Hana home.
Instead...
he witnessed the embrace.
He watched his daughter smile—a genuine smile—for the first time since the attack.
Something shifted inside him.
For years he had believed loyalty could be bought.
Respect could be demanded.
Fear could guarantee obedience.
But this young waitress had earned his daughter's trust in a single day...
Without asking for anything in return.
Daniel made a decision.
No matter who had ordered the assassination.
No matter how long it took to uncover the traitor.
Emma Carter would never face that danger alone.
May you like
Because the moment she stepped between Hana and a bullet...
She had unknowingly become part of a war far larger than she could imagine.
