Chapter 3 – The Shadow Inside the Organization

The rain had stopped by morning.
Sunlight filtered through the hospital blinds, casting long golden lines across the quiet room. For the first time since the shooting, Emma Carter managed to sleep for more than an hour without waking in panic.
The peace lasted exactly twelve minutes.
A sharp knock echoed at the door.
Emma looked up to find two men in dark suits standing outside. Their expressions were calm but alert, scanning every corner of the hallway before one of them stepped inside.
"Miss Carter," he said politely. "Mr. Kim is here."
Emma frowned.
"I didn't ask for visitors."
"You didn't."
The man stepped aside.
Daniel Kim entered the room.
He wore a charcoal-gray suit without a single wrinkle. There was no visible weapon, yet something about him radiated quiet authority.
He stopped beside her bed.
"How is your shoulder?"
"It still hurts."
"The doctors say you'll recover completely."
Emma nodded.
"I've been lucky."
Daniel looked at the bandage.
"No."
His voice remained calm.
"You survived because the bullet passed through cleanly. Luck had very little to do with it."
Emma didn't know how to respond.
She had never met anyone who spoke with such certainty.
Daniel placed a folder on the bedside table.
"The café owner has already been compensated."
Emma blinked.
"What?"
"The building will be repaired."
"My boss..."
"Will continue paying your salary while you recover."
Emma stared at him.
"You did all that?"
"I did."
"I can't accept charity."
Daniel met her eyes.
"It isn't charity."
"It's repayment."
Emma slowly pushed the folder back toward him.
"You don't owe me anything."
For the first time, Daniel looked genuinely surprised.
Most people rushed to accept anything connected to his name.
Money.
Power.
Protection.
This woman refused all three.
Across the city...
Inside an underground parking garage...
Three men gathered beside a black sedan.
One of them tossed a photograph onto the hood.
Emma Carter.
Still alive.
The oldest man folded his arms.
"She wasn't supposed to survive."
"Neither was the child."
"The boss won't be pleased."
Another man picked up the photo.
"Do we eliminate the witness?"
The oldest man shook his head.
"Not yet."
"What changed?"
"The moment Daniel Kim visited her in the hospital."
Silence settled over the group.
Everyone understood what that meant.
If Daniel had personally become interested...
Touching Emma would now mean declaring open war.
Meanwhile...
Daniel's headquarters occupied the top floors of an unmarked office tower overlooking Elliott Bay.
From the outside it appeared to belong to an international shipping company.
Inside...
Every hallway was monitored.
Every elevator required biometric access.
Every visitor was searched twice.
Daniel stood before a digital map of Seattle.
His security chief, Kang Min-jae, entered carrying a tablet.
"We've identified thirty-two employees who knew Hana's schedule."
Daniel remained silent.
"Five had access to the café route."
"Background checks?"
"Clean."
"Financial records?"
"Nothing unusual."
Daniel finally turned.
"What about family?"
Kang hesitated.
"One employee's younger brother accumulated significant gambling debts last month."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Bring him in."
At the hospital...
Emma was preparing for discharge.
A nurse handed her a small envelope.
"It arrived this morning."
"There wasn't a name."
Inside lay a single white card.
No message.
Only one sentence.
You should have looked away.
Emma felt the color drain from her face.
A second knock came before she could call anyone.
This time it wasn't Daniel.
It was Hana.
The seven-year-old rushed into the room carrying a bouquet of sunflowers almost as large as herself.
"They're your favorite now," Hana declared proudly.
Emma laughed.
"I didn't know I had a favorite."
"I decided."
Behind her, Daniel entered more slowly.
His smile disappeared the instant he noticed Emma's expression.
"What's wrong?"
Without speaking, Emma handed him the card.
Daniel read it once.
Then handed it to Kang.
The room became noticeably colder.
Kang examined the handwriting.
"It wasn't mailed."
"No."
Daniel answered quietly.
"It was delivered."
Someone had entered the hospital.
Someone had reached Emma's room.
Someone wanted them to know they were watching.
Within minutes...
Every entrance to the hospital was locked down by Daniel's security team.
Doctors protested.
Administrators complained.
No one stopped them.
Security footage from the previous twelve hours played across multiple monitors.
Hundreds of visitors.
Dozens of nurses.
Cleaning staff.
Delivery workers.
Then...
Kang paused the video.
"There."
A janitor.
Face partially hidden beneath a cap.
Pushing an empty cleaning cart.
He stopped outside Emma's room for exactly six seconds.
Long enough to leave an envelope.
"Can we identify him?"
Kang zoomed in.
The employee badge looked genuine.
Too genuine.
"The badge belongs to someone who called in sick yesterday."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"They're getting closer."
That evening...
Emma packed the last of her belongings.
"I'll just take a taxi home."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"I can take care of myself."
"I don't doubt that."
"Then why?"
He answered without hesitation.
"Because whoever attacked Hana now knows your name."
Emma looked away.
"I don't want bodyguards following me."
"You misunderstand."
Daniel's voice remained even.
"I'm not assigning guards."
"I'm relocating you."
Emma stared.
"Relocating?"
"Temporarily."
"No."
His security team exchanged uncertain glances.
Very few people ever refused Daniel Kim directly.
Emma crossed her arms.
"My father needs me."
"I know."
"I have bills."
"I know."
"I have a life."
"I know."
"Then stop trying to control it."
The room fell silent.
Instead of becoming angry...
Daniel slowly nodded.
"Fair enough."
Emma relaxed slightly.
Then he asked,
"If something happens to your father because they cannot reach you..."
She froze.
"...will you still refuse?"
The words weren't a threat.
They were a warning.
A painfully realistic one.
Emma closed her eyes.
She hated that he was right.
Late that night...
A modest suburban neighborhood.
Emma's father switched off the living room television before heading to bed.
As he walked past the front window...
He noticed headlights.
A black sedan sat across the street.
Engine running.
No lights.
No movement.
Just waiting.
He frowned.
Then the sedan slowly drove away.
Unaware that two blocks behind it...
Another vehicle had been watching the entire time.
Kang lowered his binoculars.
Into his radio, he spoke quietly.
"They've started surveillance."
Daniel's voice answered immediately through the earpiece.
"Then we're out of time."
Kang watched the disappearing sedan.
"What are your orders?"
There was a brief pause.
Then Daniel replied with absolute certainty.
"Bring Emma and her father somewhere they can't be found."
As Kang started the engine...
Neither man noticed the tiny drone hovering silently above the neighborhood.
A blinking red light recorded everything.
Somewhere across the city...
May you like
An unseen figure smiled.
"They're finally making their move."
