Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Justice

While Lily rebuilt her physical strength, the legal system dismantled the lives of those who had tried to destroy her.

The trial of The State of New Jersey v. Helen Vance, Arthur Vance, and Julian Thorne became a high-profile media sensation. However, David ensured that Lily was protected from the public eye, refusing to let reporters near his daughter.

On the day of sentencing, David sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a dark gray suit.

Helen sat at the defense table, wearing an orange jumpsuit, her hair unkempt, her eyes sunken and hollow. Beside her, Arthur looked utterly defeated, while Dr. Thorne stared blankly at the floor.

Judge Rebecca Simmons did not mince words as she read the final verdicts.

"The cruelty demonstrated by the defendants in this case is beyond comprehension," Judge Simmons declared, her voice ringing through the silent courtroom. "To systematically poison a child, to strip her of her mobility and dignity for financial gain, is an act of absolute malice."

The judge slammed her gavel down with thunderous finality.

Helen Vance was sentenced to forty-five years in state prison without the possibility of parole. Arthur Vance received thirty years for financial fraud and conspiracy to commit attempted murder. Dr. Julian Thorne was sentenced to life imprisonment for the illegal manufacture and distribution of neurotoxins that had harmed dozens of victims across three states.

As the guards led Helen away in handcuffs, she looked back at David, her lips trembling as if she wanted to beg for forgiveness.

David met her gaze with a calm, untroubled expression. He did not feel anger anymore. He felt only absolute closure. He adjusted his tie, stood up, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sun.
