Chapter 7 - The Road to Recovery

Six months later.

The Vance estate was no longer a quiet, gloomy fortress. The heavy curtains had been pulled back, letting brilliant sunlight flood the marble halls.

In the backyard, near the very driveway where six months ago Lily had been sprayed with cold water, a physical therapy parallel bar setup had been constructed on the lush green lawn.

Lily stood between the wooden bars, sweat shining on her forehead. She wore athletic shorts and a grey T-shirt. Her legs, once thin and weakened from artificial paralysis, were now showing defined muscle tone from months of intensive rehabilitation under Dr. Sterling’s care.

Dr. Sterling stood at the end of the bars, holding a stopwatch. "Alright, Lily. Five steps today. That's the goal."

David sat on a bench nearby, holding two glasses of lemonade, watching his daughter with breathless anticipation.

Lily took a deep breath. She gripped the wooden bars tightly, lifted her right foot, and placed it forward.

One.

Her knee wobbled slightly, but she stabilized herself.

Two.

"Great form, Lily! Keep your chin up!" Dr. Sterling encouraged.

Three.

She let go of the left bar, balancing with only one hand.

Four.

Lily let go of the right bar entirely. She stood unassisted in the warm sunlight, balancing on her own two feet. She looked at her father, a triumphant smile breaking across her face.

Five.

She took the final step forward into the open grass, entirely unsupported, and caught herself before she could lose her balance.

David dropped the lemonade glasses onto the grass and rushed forward, catching her in a tight, joyful hug. They tumbled together onto the soft lawn, laughing through tears of pure happiness.

"I did it, Daddy!" Lily cheered, wiping sweat from her eyes. "I walked!"

"You did it, sweetie," David sobbed, kissing her hair. "You did it."
