Chapter 7 - The Unveiling

The attackers were driven back by Desmond’s private security, but the mansion was a wreck. Raina stood in the ruins of the library, holding Teddy, her knuckles bruised and her dress torn.
Desmond walked over to her. He was bleeding from a graze on his cheek, but he didn't seem to notice. He knelt in front of her.
"They want you," he said softly. "Because you are the last of them. And because you have the ring, you are the only one who can unlock the offshore accounts that contain the Vane fortune—the fortune that can destroy the people who attacked us tonight."

"I don't want their money," Raina said. "I want a life for my son."
"Then let me protect you," Desmond replied, reaching out to take her hand—not to take the ring, but to hold her fingers. "Not for the legacy. For you."
