Chapter 5 - The Deposition of Lies

The deposition room on the fourteenth floor of the Cook County Courthouse smelled of cheap carpet cleaner and stale coffee.
Connor sat across the table from me, wearing a suit that was slightly too big for him—a physical reminder of the weight he had lost over the past seventy-two hours. His hair was unwashed, his eyes bloodshot, and his fingernails bitten down to the quick.
Beside him sat Arthur Vance—a greasy, loud man in a flashy pinstripe suit who kept shuffling a thick stack of papers to make himself look busy.
I sat between Kenneth and Maya, my assistant. I wore a tailored midnight-blue suit, my hair pinned up in a pristine French twist. I looked every bit the Chief of Pediatric Surgery I was destined to become.
"We are on the record," the court reporter announced, her fingers hovering over her machine. "Deposition of Connor Fleming in the matter of Sinclair v. Fleming and Vance."
Arthur Vance cleared his throat loudly. "Let me make our position crystal clear before we begin. My client, Mr. Fleming, is a victim of an extraordinary fraud perpetrated by Melinda Vance. He entered into what he believed was a loving relationship, supported her through what he thought was a legitimate pregnancy, and bonded deeply with minor child Leo. To sever that bond now would be an act of unspeakable cruelty to a innocent child!"
Kenneth didn't even look up from his notepad. "Mr. Vance, save the dramatic monologue for the local news. We are here to establish facts."
Kenneth turned his sharp gaze toward Connor.
"Mr. Fleming," Kenneth began, his voice calm and lethal. "On May 14th of last year, you visited the Reproductive Medicine Center in downtown Chicago. Is that correct?"
Connor swallowed hard. "I... I don't remember the exact date."
"Let me refresh your memory," Kenneth said, sliding a printed log across the table. "Security badge records show you entered the facility at 2:14 p.m. using Dr. Sinclair’s administrative pass code—a pass code she only gave you for emergency medical reasons while she was deployed."
Connor’s eyes darted toward his lawyer. "I went to pick up some tax documents for Kirsten!"
"The tax documents were kept at her private practice in Lincoln Park, Mr. Fleming," Kenneth countered instantly. "The Reproductive Medicine Center only holds cryogenic genetic material."
"I made a mistake!" Connor raised his voice, his hands trembling. "I was looking for her files!"
"You were looking for her viable embryos," Kenneth said coldly. "And five minutes after you left that facility, a wire transfer of $50,000 was executed from your personal checking account to an offshore clinic in Cabo San Lucas specializing in unverified surrogate implantations."
Arthur Vance’s mouth snapped shut. He slowly turned his head to look at his client. "Connor... what is he talking about?"
"Nothing!" Connor yelled, his face turning dark purple. "He’s lying! He’s twisting things!"
"I have the wire confirmation right here, Mr. Fleming," Kenneth said, sliding a second document across the table. "Signed with your digital signature. IP address traced directly to your home office."
Connor stared at the paper. The trap had closed so fast he didn't even have room to breathe.
"You knew," I spoke up, my voice cutting through his panic like a surgical steel blade.
Connor looked up at me, his eyes wide with horror.
"You knew from the very beginning," I said softly. "Melinda didn't trick you. You planned it together. You realized that if you just divorced me, you would only get a standard property split. But if you had a child—a child carrying my family’s trust-fund lineage—you could demand massive child support payments, alimony, and control over the family estate."
"No..." Connor whimpered. "No, Kirsten, that's not... I loved you..."
"You never loved me," I said. "You loved my money. You loved my status. And when you realized I was smarter than you, you decided to steal the one thing I wanted most in this world—my child—and use him as a paycheck."
Kenneth leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table.
"Mr. Fleming," Kenneth said, "you are facing federal criminal indictment for conspiracy to commit medical fraud, grand larceny, and child trafficking. If you proceed with this custody petition, we will hand these documents directly to the United States Attorney’s Office in five minutes."
Arthur Vance pulled off his glasses and rubbed his eyes. He leaned over to Connor and whispered fiercely into his ear: "You lied to me. You’re going to prison if you fight this. Sign the custody waiver now, or I’m walking out of this room."
Connor looked at his lawyer, then at Kenneth, and finally at me.

The last remnant of his pathetic arrogance crumbled into dust.
"Where..." Connor choked out, tears streaming down his face. "Where do I sign?"
