Chapter 2 - The Sound of Shattered Glass

The sound of the plastic bottle striking the sterile vinyl floor reverberated down the pediatric corridor like a starting gun. Milk splashed across the polished floor, speckling the hem of Melinda’s designer jeans and pool-ing near the wheels of the sleek, expensive stroller.
The baby whimpered, startled by the sharp noise, but no one moved to soothe him.
Melinda’s hands remained frozen in the air, trembling violently. Her eyes were locked onto Kenneth Boyd.
Kenneth was not just a prominent family law attorney in Chicago; he was a shark who specialized in high-net-worth forensic litigation and corporate asset recovery. He wore a tailored charcoal suit that cost more than Connor’s monthly car payment, and he walked with the measured, unhurried posture of a man who already knew how the story ended.
Connor’s grin faltered, morphing into a scowl of irritation. He didn't recognize Kenneth—he had insisted on using a bottom-tier strip-mall attorney during our divorce to "save money," assuming I would be too devastated to fight back.
"Who the hell are you?" Connor demanded, stepping in front of Melinda as if trying to block her from Kenneth's sight. "This is a private conversation. Get lost."
Kenneth didn't even look at Connor. His eyes remained fixed on Melinda, a cold, professional smile touching his lips.
"Hello, Melinda," Kenneth said smoothly. "Or should I say, Ms. Vance? It’s been about six months since we last spoke to your bank’s compliance officer."
Melinda let out a strange, wheezing breath. She took a step back, her hand blindly reaching out to grasp the handlebar of the stroller for support. "Kenneth... please. Not here."
"What are you talking about?" Connor snapped, turning to glare at Melinda. "Melinda, who is this guy? Why are you shaking?"
I stepped forward, my white lab coat swishing gently against my knees. The tablet containing my patient charts felt light in my hands. The heavy, suffocating grief that Connor had inflicted on me for seven years had vanished, replaced by the sharp, invigorating clarity of a surgeon holding a scalpel.
"Connor," I said softly, my voice carrying clearly to the gathered nurses, patients, and staff who were pretending not to listen. "You spent seven years telling me I was broken. You spent seven years watching me cry over negative pregnancy tests, taking hormone injections that made me sick, and paying tens of thousands of dollars out of my personal trust fund for IVF cycles."
"Because you couldn't give me a child!" Connor yelled, his face flushing red as he tried to regain control of the room. "And look! Melinda gave me Leo! A healthy, beautiful boy! Proof that I wasn't the problem!"
"Oh, Connor," Kenneth sighed, opening the thick leather folder tucked beneath his arm. "You really have no idea what you’ve been living with for the past two years, do you?"
Kenneth pulled out a sleek, white tablet and tapped the screen twice. He turned it around, displaying a high-resolution scan of a medical document bearing the seal of the Illinois State Medical Repository and a certified forensic audit from First National Bank.
"Mr. Fleming," Kenneth said, his tone dry and conversational. "Eighteen months ago—while Dr. Sinclair was deployed on a surgical humanitarian mission in South America—Ms. Vance accessed Dr. Sinclair's private medical files through the clinic where she worked as a office manager."
Connor blinked, confused. "So what? They were friends!"
"She didn't just access them," Kenneth continued. "She altered the cryogenic storage logs at the Reproductive Medicine Center. Dr. Sinclair didn't fail her fifth IVF cycle, Mr. Fleming. Her viable embryos—three perfectly healthy, genetically screened embryos created using Dr. Sinclair’s eggs and donor genetic material from a private bank—didn't 'fail to thrive' in the lab."
The hallway went deathly silent.
I watched Connor’s face. The arrogance was beginning to fracture, replaced by a slow, agonizing dawn of confusion.
"What are you saying?" Connor whispered.
"I’m saying," I cut in, stepping right up to the edge of the spilled milk, "that the child in that stroller isn't Melinda’s biological miracle. And he certainly isn't yours."
Melinda covered her face with both hands and began to sob uncontrollably, sinking to her knees right beside the puddle of milk.
"She stole my viable embryo, Connor," I said, my voice cold as ice. "She forged my signature on the cryogenic release forms, transferred the embryo into her own uterus through an offshore clinic in Mexico, and brought you a child that belongs entirely to my genetic line."
Connor stared at me, then slowly turned his head to look down at the sobbing woman on the floor.
"No," Connor breathed, taking a step away from her as if she were contagious. "No, no, no. That's impossible. He looks like me! He has my eyes!"
"He has my family’s blue eyes, Connor," I corrected gently. "My father had the exact same shade. And as for your fertility? Kenneth, read him his own medical records."
Kenneth flipped to the second page in the folder. "According to the comprehensive semen analysis conducted by Dr. Aris Thorne three years ago—which Ms. Vance intercepted and hid from you while managing Dr. Sinclair’s mail—you suffer from severe, irreversible azoospermia due to an untreated childhood mumps infection. You are completely, 100% sterile, Mr. Fleming. You were never capable of fathering a child."
Connor’s world shattered right there on the polished floor of the pediatric ward.
He stumbled backward, catching himself against the wall. The color drained completely from his cheeks, leaving him looking like a ghost. He looked at the baby in the stroller—the little boy he had paraded around as proof of his manhood, proof of his victory over me.
"You... you lied to me?" Connor gasped, staring down at Melinda. "You made me walk out on my wife?! You made me leave my home?!"
"You wanted to leave, Connor!" Melinda shrieked through her tears, looking up from the floor, her face smeared with mascara. "You hated her! You hated that she was smarter than you, richer than you, better than you! I just gave you what you wanted!"
"You stole my son!" Connor roared.
"He is NOT your son!" Kenneth barked, his voice cutting through the corridor like a whip. "He is Dr. Kirsten Sinclair’s biological child, born through an illegal surrogate theft, financed by embezzled funds Ms. Vance took from Dr. Sinclair’s private practice!"
Two hospital security guards stepped out from the nearby service elevator, accompanied by two uniformed officers from the Chicago Police Department.

Kenneth closed his folder with a sharp SNAP.
"Officer," Kenneth said, turning to the police officers. "That is Melinda Vance. There is an active federal warrant for her arrest for medical identity theft, grand larceny, and illegal custodial conversion. Take her into custody."
