Chapter 3 - The Arrest on the Ward

The handcuffs clicked with a sharp, metallic finality that echoed off the white walls of the pediatric ward.
Melinda screamed as the female officer pulled her hands behind her back. "Connor! Help me! Connor, do something! I did this for us! I did this so we could be a family!"
Connor stood frozen against the wall, his arms limp at his sides. He looked at Melinda as if she were a stranger who had broken into his house. The man who, five minutes ago, had held his head high and proclaimed his triumph over me was now shrinking, looking smaller and more pathetic with every second that passed.
"I don't know her," Connor stammered to the police officer, his voice high and frantic. "I didn't know anything about this! She lied to me! Officer, I’m the victim here!"
"Save it for the judge, sir," the lead officer said, hoisting Melinda to her feet. "Ms. Vance, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
"Kirsten! Please!" Melinda wept, turning her frantic, blotchy face toward me as she was led away. "I’m sorry! I was jealous! You had everything! You had the medical degree, the money, the trust fund, the respect... and Connor was so easy to take! He was so insecure! Please don't take the baby!"
I looked at her without a single trace of emotion on my face.
"You took my marriage, Melinda," I said quietly. "You took my best friend. You took my peace of mind for seven years. But you don't get to keep my child."
A pediatric nurse stepped forward, carefully lifting little Leo out of the stroller. The baby whimpered slightly, but the nurse cradled him gently, wrapping him in a clean hospital blanket and stepping away from the chaos.
"Where are you taking him?!" Connor yelled, suddenly snapping out of his trance and lunging toward the nurse. "That’s my son! You can't take him!"
"Touch her, Mr. Fleming, and I’ll have you arrested for obstruction of justice," Kenneth warned, stepping directly into Connor’s path. "You have zero biological link to that child. You have zero legal custody. In fact, as of ten minutes ago, an emergency ex parte order was granted by Judge Sarah Holbrook placing Leo in the temporary legal custody of Dr. Kirsten Sinclair pending formal parentage confirmation."
"No!" Connor shouted, his voice cracking. "No! I raised him for a year! I changed his diapers! I bought his clothes!"
"With money you stole from Dr. Sinclair’s joint alimony settlement accounts," Kenneth added dryly. "Which brings us to your next problem, Connor."
Kenneth pulled a second set of papers from his folder and handed them directly to Connor.
"What is this?" Connor whispered, his hands trembling as he held the documents.
"That is a motion to vacate your entire divorce settlement on the grounds of egregious fraud," Kenneth explained. "When you divorced Dr. Sinclair, you claimed half of her family’s real estate holdings and three million dollars in liquid assets, claiming you were forced to walk away with 'nothing' due to her emotional negligence. But since your entire claim was built on a fraudulent narrative orchestrated by your co-conspirator, Ms. Vance, we are freezing all your bank accounts, seizing your vehicle, and clawing back every single cent."
Connor stared at the paper. "You... you’re bankrupting me?"
"No, Connor," I said, stepping closer to him, looking down into his terrified, bloodshot eyes. "You bankrupted yourself the moment you decided that hurting me was more important than being an honest man. You wanted a real family? You don't build a family on stolen ground."
"Kirsten..." Connor dropped to his knees right there in the middle of the hallway, right in front of the spilled milk. He reached out, trying to grab the hem of my lab coat, his face collapsing into pathetic, ugly tears. "Kirsten, please! I was wrong! She manipulated me! She tricked me! I still love you! We can raise Leo together! He’s your son, and I’m the only father he’s ever known! We can fix this!"
I pulled my lab coat back from his reach.

"I have a staff meeting in five minutes, Connor," I said, checking my watch calmly. "And then I’m going to go hold my son."
I turned on my heel and walked down the hallway toward the conference room. Behind me, I could hear Connor sobbing on the floor, surrounded by the whispers of the hospital staff he had tried so hard to impress.
