Chapter 6 - The Fall of Lila Grant

While the corporate world was shifting, Lila Grant was discovering the harsh reality of life without an opulent safety net.
Sitting in a cramped, noisy interrogation room at the city precinct, Lila was sweating under the harsh fluorescent lights. Her legal aid attorney—a tired-looking man provided by the state—sat beside her, flipping through a mountain of evidence photos provided by the Hartwell legal team.
"Ms. Grant," the lead fraud detective said, tapping a pen against his notepad. "We have bank records showing you received three separate wire transfers totaling six hundred thousand dollars from Nolan Mercer’s offshore account into your personal account over the last ninety days."
"I told you! It was a gift!" Lila sobbed, her mascara running down her pale cheeks. "He said he was giving me a settlement from his company!"
"He gave you stolen corporate funds, Ms. Grant," the detective replied coldly. "And under state law, receiving wire transfers of embezzled funds over one hundred thousand dollars carries a mandatory minimum sentence of eight years in state prison."
Lila gasped, turning wildly to her public defender. "Do something! Tell them I didn't know! I’m the victim here! Nolan lied to me!"
"Ms. Grant," her attorney said with a weary sigh. "We also have text messages where you explicitly asked him if the money was cleared through the Hartwell Trust before you put the down payment on the downtown penthouse. You were fully aware of where that capital was coming from."
The door to the interrogation room opened, and Uncle Grant stepped inside, holding a slender black folder.
Lila looked up, a desperate spark of hope ignited in her eyes. "Are... are you here to make a deal? Is Evelyn dropping the charges?"
Uncle Grant looked down at her with professional disdain.
"Evelyn doesn't care enough about you to hold a grudge, Ms. Grant," Uncle Grant said calmly. "However, as the head of the Hartwell Asset Recovery Division, I am here to serve you with an immediate civil asset forfeiture notice."
He laid the documents on the table.
"The four-bedroom downtown penthouse has been seized by the court. Your luxury vehicles, your designer handbag collection, and every piece of jewelry purchased by Nolan using embezzled funds have been impounded as evidence."

"Everything?" Lila squeaked, her voice barely audible. "What am I supposed to do? Where am I supposed to live?"
"That," Uncle Grant replied as he turned toward the door, "is a problem for you and your probation officer to solve. Have a good afternoon."
