Chapter 3 - The Audit of Betrayal

"What do you mean destroyed the company?" Nolan’s voice rose to a panicky, cracking pitch. "Mercer Dynamics is fine! We just finalized the quarterly projections!"
"Your quarterly projections," Evelyn said, walking over to her vanity nightstand and picking up Lila’s gold designer handbag, "were based entirely on the assumption that my father’s trust would execute the thirty-million-dollar equity injection at 8:00 AM tomorrow morning."
Lila reached out nervously. "Hey! That’s my bag—"
"Shut up," Thomas Hartwell snapped, not even looking at her.
Evelyn unzipped the handbag, turned it upside down, and let its contents dump onto the bed sheets. Out fell lipsticks, a compact mirror, a set of expensive apartment keys, and three folded sheets of heavy bond paper bearing the letterhead of Mercer Dynamics Executive Office.
Evelyn picked up the papers.
Nolan’s face drained of what little color it had left. "Evelyn... put those down."
"What are those, Evelyn?" Uncle Grant asked, stepping closer.
"These," Evelyn said, scanning the text with cold precision, "are unauthorized internal transfer orders dated three days ago. Nolan drafted them to divert two point four million dollars from the upcoming Hartwell trust injection directly into a private shell company called L&M Holdings."
She looked up at Lila, then at Nolan.
"Lila and Mercer Holdings," Evelyn translated smoothly. "Registered in Delaware six weeks ago. The company’s primary asset is a four-bedroom penthouse luxury condominium in downtown Dallas, purchased with a down payment drawn from Mercer Dynamics' operating reserve."
Eleanor Mercer gasped, putting her hands over her face. Richard Mercer sank into an armchair, looking like he was about to have a heart attack.
"You were stealing from the company?" Old Harrison Mercer whispered, taking a step toward his grandson, his knuckles white around his cane. "You were embezzling funds from the very capital Thomas Hartwell provided to keep us solvent?"
"No! Grandpa, listen to me!" Nolan stammered, backing away until his spine hit the mantelpiece. "It was an advance! I was going to pay it back once the logistics integration completed! Lila needed a place to secure her assets because of her divorce—"
"You used my father's money to buy your mistress a penthouse," Evelyn interrupted, her tone completely devoid of emotion. "And then you brought her into my home, placed her in my bed, and told me to go sleep in a hotel so you could celebrate your theft together."
Lila started sobbing uncontrollably, backing into the corner of the room. "I didn't know! He told me the money was his! He said he owned half of Hartwell Logistics!"
"You knew exactly what you were doing, Lila," Evelyn said, stepping right up to her. "You've been texting him every day for six months. Including the message you sent him at 2:00 PM today while I was getting into my wedding dress."
Evelyn pulled up her phone, pressing play on a voice memo she had received from her private investigator thirty minutes earlier.
Lila's recorded voice rang out clearly from the phone speaker:
“Make sure she leaves the house tonight, Nolan. I want to spend our first official night as business partners in that giant master bedroom. She doesn't deserve any of it anyway.”
Nolan’s mother looked like she was going to throw up.
Old Harrison Mercer closed his eyes, leaning heavily on his cane. When he opened them, the old tycoon looked ten years older, but his voice was as sharp as broken glass.
"Richard," Harrison said to his son, Nolan's father. "Call our corporate legal team. Execute Emergency Provision Article 9 immediately."
Nolan blinked frantically. "Article 9? Grandpa, no! That’s the emergency removal clause!"
"As of 1:00 AM," Harrison announced, looking his grandson straight in the eye, "Nolan Mercer is officially stripped of his title as Chief Executive Officer of Mercer Dynamics. His voting shares are voting-frozen under the fraud governance protocol, his corporate credit cards are canceled, and his access to all company facilities is revoked."
"You can't do that!" Nolan shrieked. "I built the new software platform!"
"You built nothing!" Thomas Hartwell roared, stepping directly into Nolan’s face, his huge frame towering over the younger man. "My daughter’s trust funded your developers! My legal team protected your patents! You are a pathetic, arrogant parasite who thought he could bleed my family dry and disrespect my daughter under her own roof!"

Thomas turned to the two armed security officers standing at the door.
"Escort this man and his accomplice off my daughter's property," Thomas ordered. "If either of them sets foot on this street again, have them arrested for criminal trespass."
