Chapter 9 - The Garden of Light

One year after my seventy-second birthday.

The autumn air in Chicago was crisp, painting the trees along Lake Shore Drive in brilliant shades of amber, crimson, and gold.

My apartment was filled with light, laughter, and the mouth-watering scent of a roasting turkey.

It was my seventy-third birthday.

Standing in my living room were twenty people who had become my real family: Mrs. Alvarez and her daughter, Evelyn Reed, Thomas the doorman, and several members from my local community center.

Daniel stood near the dining table, wearing a simple sweater, holding a glass of sparkling cider. He raised his glass, smiling at me with eyes filled with deep, unquestioned devotion.

"One year ago today," Daniel said, his voice ringing clearly across the cheerful room, "I sat at a dinner table three miles from here, completely ignorant of the truth. I thought I was a successful man because I built a company. I was wrong."

He looked at me, his voice softening with emotion.

"Real success is standing beside the people who gave you life. Real success is protecting those who protected you when you were small. To my mother, Eleanor—the strongest, most resilient woman I will ever know. Happy Birthday, Mom."

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ELEANOR!" everyone cheered, raising their glasses into the warm afternoon light.

I looked around the room, feeling a deep, radiant warmth bloom in my chest—a warmth no broken furnace could ever take away.
