Chapter 2 - The Eviction from Paradise

"Get your hands off me!" Vanessa shrieked as the cold steel snapped around her wrists. "This is my house! You can't do this in my home!"

"Vanessa Miller, you have the right to remain silent," the lead officer recited calmly, forcing her arms behind her back. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

Mark didn't even put up a fight. He sat completely motionless as the second officer pulled him up from his chair, clicked the cuffs onto his wrists, and led him toward the front door.

"Daniel! Do something!" Vanessa sobbed, her composure completely disintegrating as she was marched past her horrified dinner guests. "Mom! Tell them to stop! I'm your daughter!"

I stood up slowly, leaning on the wooden cane Mrs. Alvarez had bought for me.

"You stopped being my daughter," I said softly as she reached the door, "the night you locked the garage door from the outside so I wouldn't wander into the yard during your dinner party."

The front door slammed shut behind them, leaving the house in a ringing, heavy silence. The catered guests quickly slipped out the side door, terrified of being drawn into the legal nightmare unfolding before their eyes.

Daniel stood up, his breathing heavy, his hands trembling as he looked around the luxurious five-bedroom suburban home his sister had bought using my husband's pension and my condo's rent money.

"Evelyn," Daniel said, turning to my attorney. "What happens now?"

"First," Evelyn said, opening her briefcase on the marble kitchen island, "we have already filed an emergency motion to freeze every bank account associated with Vanessa and Mark Miller. Second, we have served a notice of eviction on this property. Since it was purchased with funds laundered from your mother’s trust, we are filing a lis pendens to seize the deed."

Daniel walked over to me, wrapping his arm gently around my waist to support me. "Mom, you are coming home with me tonight. The finest hotel in downtown Chicago until we get your condominium back from that corporate tenant."

"No, Daniel," I said, shaking my head gently.

He blinked, surprised. "What do you mean, Mom? You can't stay here. And you certainly aren't going back to that garage."

"I am going to stay in my condo," I said firmly. "Evelyn, can we terminate the corporate lease?"

"The corporate lease was executed under a fraudulent power of attorney, Mrs. Vance," Evelyn smiled faintly. "It is legally void. The tenant has thirty days to vacate, but given the circumstances of financial fraud, I can have a judge sign an emergency occupancy order by tomorrow afternoon."

Daniel looked at me, fresh tears shining in his eyes. "Mom, let me buy you a house. A real house. Anything you want in Seattle, in California, in Florida... I have the money."

I reached up and gently cupped my son's face.

"Daniel, you spent three years believing your sister while she kept me in a cage," I said quietly, not with anger, but with the quiet truth of a mother who had spent three years thinking her son had abandoned her. "You gave her money every month, but you never came to visit me once. You were 'too busy' with your corporate meetings in Seattle."

Daniel winced as if I had struck him across the face.

May you like

"I know," he whispered, his voice cracking. "I failed you. God help me, Mom, I failed you."

"You didn't fail me intentionally, Daniel," I said, picking up my small canvas bag containing my few possessions from the garage. "But you bought your peace of mind with a monthly check instead of a plane ticket. Now, I need you to help me fix this. Not with your wallet... with your time."
