Chapter 7 - The Final Judgment

Two days later, the jury returned with their verdict after deliberating for less than an hour.

"Will the defendant please rise?" the judge commanded.

Vanessa stood up slowly, her hands trembling as she smoothed down her jacket.

"On Count One, Conspiracy to Commit Wire Fraud, how do you find?"

"Guilty," the jury foreman announced firmly.

"On Count Two, Aggravated Elder Financial Abuse, how do you find?"

"Guilty."

"On Count Three, Identity Theft and Money Laundering, how do you find?"

"Guilty."

Vanessa’s knees buckled, and her public defender had to catch her by the elbow to keep her from falling to the floor.

Three weeks later, the sentencing hearing took place.

The judge, a formidable woman named Honorable Justice Davis, looked down from her high bench at Vanessa with absolute contempt.

"Vanessa Miller," Justice Davis said, her voice echoing through the vaulted room. "You were blessed with a loving family, a mother who cared for you, and a brother who trusted you. Yet, out of pure, unadulterated greed and malice, you treated your elderly mother worse than a stray animal while stealing millions of dollars to fund a lifestyle of fake luxury."

Justice Davis slammed her gavel down with a thunderous CRACK.

"I sentence you to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary, followed by five years of supervised release. In addition, total restitution of three million two hundred thousand dollars is to be seized from all remaining assets."

Vanessa was led away in heavy chains, sobbing hysterically as the heavy iron doors closed behind her.

I sat in the gallery, holding Daniel's hand. I didn't feel triumph. I didn't feel joy. I felt the quiet, heavy closing of a dark chapter that had almost cost me my life.
