Chapter 8 - The Verdict

We waited in the private conference room for three nerve-wracking hours. Rachel sat by the window, holding my hand, while Marcus paced the room smoothly.

"How are you feeling, sweetie?" I asked, squeezing Rachel's fingers.

"I feel... light," Rachel said, looking out at the city skyline. "For two years, Mom, Tyler made me feel like I was crazy. He gaslit me, told me I was weak, made me doubt my own sanity. Standing in that courtroom today, watching him cringe away from the truth... I finally got my life back."

At 7:15 PM, a knock came at the door. A court officer stepped in.

"The jury has reached a verdict."

We walked back into the courtroom. The atmosphere was charged with electricity. Tyler and Eleanor stood at the defense table, their faces pale and rigid.

"Will the defendants please rise?" Judge Vance instructed.

Tyler and Eleanor stood up.

"Has the jury reached a unanimous verdict?"

"We have, Your Honor," the jury foreperson, a stern woman in her fifties, replied. She handed a piece of paper to the bailiff, who passed it up to the judge.

Judge Vance read the paper silently, nodded, and looked down at the defendants.

"On Count One: Attempted First-Degree Premeditated Murder of Rachel Vance... how do you find?"

"Guilty," the foreperson announced firmly.

Rachel let out a soft breath. I gripped her arm tight.

"On Count Two: Attempted First-Degree Premeditated Murder of Lily Vance... how do you find?"

"Guilty."

"On Count Three: Aggravated Child Abuse and Endangerment... how do you find?"

"Guilty."

"On Count Four: Conspiracy to Commit Murder... how do you find?"

"Guilty on all counts, Your Honor."

Eleanor Vance collapsed into her chair with a choked scream, burying her face in her hands. Tyler stood frozen, his jaw slack, staring blankly at the wall as if his mind had completely snapped.

"The court thanks the jury for their service," Judge Vance announced, her voice booming with absolute authority. "Sentencing will take place in two weeks. Given the horrific nature of these crimes, the defendants will remain held without bail."

Gavel slam.

As the bailiffs stepped forward to put the heavy metal chains back on Tyler and Eleanor, Tyler suddenly turned toward us. His eyes were wild, desperate, filled with tears.

"Rachel! Rachel, please!" he sobbed, reaching toward her with his cuffed hands as the officers pulled him back. "I'm sorry! It was my mother! She made me do it! Rachel, I love you! Please tell them!"

Rachel stood up slowly from the prosecution table. She looked at the man she had once trusted with her heart, the man who had left her and her three-week-old baby to suffocate in the heat.

She didn't shout. She didn't cry. She simply looked him dead in the eye and said six simple, devastating words:

May you like

"You don't speak for us anymore."

Tyler was yanked back through the metal door, screaming her name until the heavy steel shut behind him, cutting off his voice forever.
