Chapter 3 - The Web Unravels

The preliminary bail hearing was set for three days later at the county courthouse. The news of the "Vance Family Attempted Murder" had leaked to the press, creating a media circus outside the building. Cameras flashed, reporters yelled questions, and news helicopters buzzed overhead as I pushed Rachel’s wheelchair through the side entrance, protected by police escorts.

Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.

Tyler sat at the defense table in a orange jumpsuit, his hands cuffed to a chain around his waist. Gone was the polished, smug executive. His hair was greasy, his eyes bloodshot, and he kept twitching nervously. Beside him sat his mother, Eleanor Vance, looking equally disheveled in her yellow jumpsuit, though her expression was locked in a bitter, murderous scowl.

On the other side of the courtroom sat Vanessa, wearing an oversized sweater, her head low. She had agreed to turn state’s evidence in exchange for a plea deal on lesser charges of conspiracy.

Judge Katherine Vance (no relation to the defendants) slammed her gavel down, demanding silence in the packed room.

"We are here today to hear bail applications for defendants Tyler Vance and Eleanor Vance," Judge Vance announced, her voice echoing through the silent chamber. "Prosecution, state your position."

Marcus stood up, immaculate in his charcoal suit. "Your Honor, the state strongly requests that both defendants be held without bail. The evidence against them—including high-definition surveillance footage, forensic drug analysis, and biological evidence recovered from Eleanor Vance’s vehicle—points to a calculated, brutal attempt on the lives of Rachel Vance and her three-week-old daughter, Lily."

"Objection!" Arthur Pendelton stood up angrily. "Your Honor, my clients are respected members of this community with deep roots in this city! The video footage is inconclusive, and Mrs. Rachel Vance has a documented history of emotional instability following her pregnancy. This is a tragic family dispute blown out of proportion!"

"A family dispute?" Marcus fired back, his voice ringing with thunderous authority. "Is lacing a mother’s drink with lethal doses of sedatives and locking her in a 120-degree steel trap with an infant a 'family dispute'? This was an execution attempt, Your Honor! Driven by greed and the desire to liquidate the Hastings Land Trust!"

"That land trust argument is purely speculative!" Pendelton shouted.

"Is it?" Marcus pulled a heavy stack of papers from his folder. "Your Honor, I submit into evidence the financial records of Vance Capital. Over the past eighteen months, Tyler Vance embezzled over twelve million dollars from his firm’s client accounts to cover massive gambling debts in Macau and failed cryptocurrency investments. He was facing total financial ruin and federal prosecution."

The courtroom gasped. Tyler flinched, looking frantically at his lawyer. Eleanor’s cold scowl shattered, replaced by a look of sheer panic as she glared at her son.

"Tyler Vance needed the Hastings Land Trust to cover his crimes," Marcus continued, pacing slowly in front of the judge’s bench. "The trust agreement specifies that if Rachel Vance dies without a living will, full power of attorney and ownership of the land passes to her husband. He and his mother planned to kill Rachel, blame it on postpartum psychosis, liquidate the land for thirty million dollars, and flee the country."

"Lie! It's all lies!" Eleanor suddenly shrieked, jumping up from her seat, her cuffs rattling violently against her chair. "She was a nobody! A poor, worthless nobody who dragged my son down! She deserved whatever came to her!"

"Mother, shut up!" Tyler screamed, turning to her with wild, terrified eyes.

"Silence in the court!" Judge Vance banged her gavel repeatedly, her face dark with fury. "Bailiffs, restrain the defendants!"

Two armed bailiffs rushed forward, forcing Eleanor back into her chair.

Judge Vance looked down at the defense table with absolute disgust. "I have heard enough. Given the overwhelming physical evidence, the severity of the charges, the extreme flight risk, and the blatant contempt shown in this courtroom, bail is hereby DENIED for both Tyler Vance and Eleanor Vance. They will remain in custody until trial."

Gavel slam.

A wave of murmurs rippled through the courtroom. I squeezed Rachel’s hand tightly, feeling the tension drain out of her shoulders. Tyler was led out through the back door, screaming at Pendelton to fix this, while Eleanor stared at us with pure venom as she was dragged away.

As we exited the courtroom into a private hallway, Marcus joined us, unbuttoning his suit jacket.

"That was incredible, Marcus," I said, my voice trembling with emotion. "You completely destroyed their defense."

"That was just the opening act, Diane," Marcus said with a dark, satisfied glint in his eye. "Now that they’re locked up, we start pulling on the rest of the threads. And trust me, the Vance family dirty secrets go much deeper than this."

"What do you mean?" Rachel asked softly.

Marcus looked at us seriously. "The P.I. your father hired before he died didn't just find financial embezzlement. He was investigating something else. Something about Tyler’s first fiancee—the girl who mysteriously drowned in a pool six years ago."

Rachel gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Sophia?"

"Sophia," Marcus nodded. "And guess who was the primary beneficiary of her life insurance policy?"
