Chapter 5 - The Marina Confrontation

Dark rain clouds hovered over the coast as Marcus’s black sedan tore down the highway toward the marina. The rain hit the windshield in heavy, angry sheets, matching the tempest raging inside us.

By the time we pulled up near the abandoned boat houses on the far edge of the docks, two police cruisers were already parked, their red and blue lights flashing against the dark grey water. Detective Miller stood under a large umbrella, talking to a team of officers armed with tactical rifles.

Marcus slammed his car into park, and we rushed over to him, huddled under our jackets.

"Miller! What’s the situation?" Marcus shouted over the sound of rain and wind.

"We have the perimeter secured," Miller reported, his face grim. "There’s a suspect inside with Vanessa. We tracked her cell signal right before it went dark. But it’s not Eleanor’s men."

I blinked, rain dripping off my nose. "What do you mean? Who is in there?"

"We pulled the vehicle registration of the SUV parked behind the boathouse," Miller said, looking at Rachel. "It belongs to Arthur Pendelton."

"His lawyer?" Rachel gasped. "Why would his lawyer be here?"

"Because Pendelton isn't just their lawyer," Marcus realized, his eyes widening with dark epiphany. "He’s an equity partner in Vance Capital! If the firm collapses from the fraud charges, Pendelton goes to federal prison right along with Tyler! He’s cleaning up the loose ends!"

Suddenly, a loud yell echoed from inside the boathouse, followed by the sound of breaking wood.

"Move in! Move in now!" Miller shouted into his radio.

Tactical officers kicked open the heavy wooden door of the boathouse, storming inside with flashlights and drawn weapons. Marcus, Rachel, and I followed closely behind the perimeter team, entering the cavernous, damp building. The air smelled of salt, rust, and gasoline.

Inside, beneath a dim hanging light bulb, Arthur Pendelton was holding a weeping Vanessa by her hair near the edge of an open water slip where heavy metal chains hung from the ceiling. He held a small, silver pistol to her side, his expensive suit soaked with rain and sweat, his eyes frantic and unhinged.

"Back off! All of you, back off!" Pendelton screamed, pulling Vanessa closer to the water's edge. "I’ll drop her right into the bay! I swear to God I will!"

"Pendelton, drop the gun!" Miller ordered, aiming his weapon directly at the lawyer’s chest. "It’s over! We know about the offshore accounts! We know about the fraud!"

"You don't know anything!" Pendelton shrieked, his voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls. "Tyler was supposed to handle his wife cleanly! It was supposed to look like an accident! But he failed! He ruined everything! Thirty million dollars down the drain!"

"So you were in on it from the start," Rachel said, stepping forward out from behind the officers.

Pendelton glared at her, his eyes bulging. "You... you ruined us! You were supposed to be the timid little middle-class girl who obeyed! You were supposed to die in that car!"

"I survived," Rachel said, her voice dropping to a icy, terrifying calm. She took another step forward, completely fearless. "My baby survived. And now you’re standing in a boathouse about to ruin the rest of your life for a coward who’s already rotting in a jail cell."

"Shut up!"

"Look at yourself, Arthur," Marcus interjected smoothly, taking a slow, calculated step to the left to distract him. "You were one of the top defense attorneys in the state. Now you’re standing over a puddle with a gun, about to turn a white-collar fraud charge into a capital murder charge. If you pull that trigger, you die on death row."

Pendelton’s hand began to shake violently. The reality of his situation was crashing through his panicked mind. "I... I have money... I can fix this..."

"You can't fix this," I spoke up, stepping beside my daughter. "Because my husband recorded everything. Every lie, every scam, every move your firm made. It’s all over, Arthur."

Pendelton looked down at the dark, swirling water below the slip, then at the half-dozen police rifles pointed at his head. His eyes lost their feverish madness, replaced by a sudden, hollow despair.

Vanessa saw her moment. She bit down hard on Pendelton’s wrist.

Pendelton shrieked, dropping the gun. It clattered onto the wet wooden planks and slid into the deep water below with a loud splash.

"Get him!" Miller barked.

Four officers tackled Pendelton to the ground, pinning him down and clicking handcuffs onto his wrists as he sobbed hysterically into the dirty floorboards. Two other officers pulled Vanessa away, wrapping a blanket around her trembling shoulders.

Vanessa fell to her knees in front of Rachel, weeping openly. "I'm sorry... Rachel, I'm so, so sorry! I didn't know they were going to hurt the baby! I thought Tyler was just going to leave you! I swear I didn't know!"

Rachel looked down at the woman who had helped destroy her marriage, her expression a mix of pity and quiet disdain. "Tell the truth in court, Vanessa. That’s the only way you save yourself."
