Chapter 8 - The Crucible

CRACK.
The heavy flashlight struck Julian’s right wrist just as he pulled the trigger.
The gun discharged with a deafening boom that shattered the quiet room, the bullet ricocheting off the concrete wall and embedding itself into the drywall ceiling. Plaster dust rained down on us like cold snow.
Julian gasped in pain, dropping the silver handgun onto the linoleum floor.
"Thorne! Grab Lily!" I screamed, tackling Julian around his waist with every ounce of momentum I had.
We crashed to the floor together, rolling across the slick tile. Julian was far stronger than me, his hand shooting out to grab my throat, his fingers squeezing tight, cutting off my air instantly. Spots of black and red exploded in my vision as I clawed at his face, my nails tearing skin from his cheek.
"You miserable little bitch!" Julian snarled, his eyes wide and bloodshot as he pressed me down against the floor.
Suddenly, Dr. Bennett tried to dash for the dropped gun, but Dr. Thorne moved faster. Thorne grabbed a heavy metal IV pole and swung it like a baseball bat, striking Bennett square across the chest. The old doctor went down with a heavy thud, gasping for air as the IV pole clattered against the floor.
Beside me, Sarah didn't run. For the first time in her life, the weak, terrified woman vanished.
Sarah picked up a heavy stainless steel surgical tray loaded with metal scalpels and clamps and slammed it violently into the side of Julian’s head.
Julian groaned, his grip on my neck loosening instantly as blood began to pour from a gash near his hairline. I gasped for air, dragging air back into my burning lungs as I kicked him off me with both feet.
"Get Lily!" I choked out, pushing myself up off the floor. "The fire!"
Thick, black smoke was already beginning to pour into the hallway from the stairwell. The smell of burning diesel fuel and melting plastic filled the air, heavy and suffocating. The temperature in the room was rising rapidly, the glass windows along the interior wall turning hot to the touch.
Dr. Thorne rushed to the operating table. With practiced, lightning-fast hands, he unbuckled the heavy canvas straps holding Lily down. He wrapped her small, trembling body in a sterile green surgical blanket, scooping her up into his arms.
"We have to go NOW!" Thorne yelled over the roaring sound of flames coming from below. "The main stairwell is blocked!"
"The loading dock!" I shouted, grabbing Sarah by her arm to drag her to her feet. "The back fire escape!"
Julian was struggling to sit up on the floor, dazed, blood streaming down his face, clutching his head as he coughed violently in the thickening smoke. He looked up at us, his eyes filled with a terrifying combination of shock and sudden realization that the fire he had started was going to consume him.
"Sarah..." Julian gasped, extending a bloody hand toward her. "Help me... Sarah... please..."
Sarah stopped. She looked down at her husband—the man who had bought her, used her, abused her daughter, and marked her niece for slaughter.
Slowly, deliberately, Sarah reached down and picked up the iPad security tablet sitting on the counter. She pulled the master keycard lanyard off the floor and backed toward the door.
"Goodbye, Julian," Sarah said, her voice flat, devoid of a single tear.
We sprinted out of the surgical suite into the hallway. The air was thick with blinding, toxic black smoke that burned our eyes and throats. Flashes of orange fire were licking through the floorboards at the far end of the corridor, the heat so intense it singed the hair on my arms.
"This way!" Dr. Thorne shouted, holding Lily tightly against his chest as he kicked open a red metal fire exit door at the end of the hall.
We burst out onto an exterior iron fire escape just as a massive explosion tore through the basement level below. The force of the blast blew out the glass windows of Lab B, sending a towering pillar of orange flame and black smoke roaring into the rainy night sky.
The iron staircase shook violently under our feet as we scrambled down the wet metal steps, the cold rain hitting our faces like a mercy.
We reached the ground, running across the muddy field toward the cut fence, not stopping until we reached my car hidden under the oak trees.
Dr. Thorne laid Lily carefully across the backseat, immediately checking her pulse and oxygen levels with his portable equipment.
"She’s in shock, but she’s breathing," Thorne gasped, wiping sweat and rain from his forehead. "Her pulse is stable. We need to get her to a real hospital in the next county immediately."
I jumped into the driver’s seat, slamming the car into reverse as I hit the gas.

As the sedan sped away down the dark gravel road, I looked in the rearview mirror.
Behind us, the old textile mill was completely engulfed in a towering inferno, lighting up the dark pine forest like a artificial sunrise. The flames leaped hundreds of feet into the sky, consuming the building, the secrets, and the men inside it.
