Chapter 3 - The Broken Net

"Mr. Vance," Detective Ramirez said, taking Julian’s hand and shaking it firmly. "We received the call from your office ten minutes ago regarding a potential custodial interference."
"Wait!" I shouted, stepping forward, dragging Emma behind me. "What are you talking about? He didn't call you! Dr. Thorne called you because of the surgical tape and the forged consent form!"
Detective Ramirez turned to look at me, her expression professional, detached, and utterly unyielding. "Ma'am, please calm down. We have two separate calls logged for this location. One from the hospital intake desk, and one from Mr. Vance’s legal team reporting that you took Lily Vance from a supervised weekend visit without parental consent."
"I didn't steal her!" I cried, my voice echoing off the tile walls. "Sarah brought Lily to my house! She left her with me for the weekend! Look at the text messages on my phone! Look at what she sent me!"
I yanked my phone out of my pocket and held it out toward the officer. "She texted me: 'Bring her back, or I swear you did this to her.' Look at it!"
Detective Ramirez took my phone. She swiped through the screen once, then looked up at Julian.
Julian sighed heavily, rubbing his temples with an expression of deep, paternal exhaustion. "Detective, my wife, Sarah, suffers from severe bipolar disorder and substance dependency. She has been in and out of treatment centers for three years. She sent those text messages during an episode. I have the medical records right here in my briefcase to prove her instability."
"Julian, you lying bastard!" Sarah screamed, lunging at him with her nails outstretched.
Before she could reach him, the second officer—a burly man named Officer Miller—stepped in front of her, grabbing her wrists and pushing her back against the wall. "Ma'am, step back! Do not escalate this!"
"Look at the child!" Dr. Thorne interjected, his voice booming across the lobby as he stepped up beside me. "Detective Ramirez, I am the attending physician on duty. The child, Lily Vance, is currently in Treatment Room 4 with fresh surgical incisions, suture lines consistent with illegal tissue harvesting, and a forged consent form that lists another minor child in this room as a backup donor! This is not a custody dispute! This is a felony child exploitation case!"
Detective Ramirez looked at Dr. Thorne, then at the clipboard held tightly in his hand. She reached out and took the folder, scanning the pages slowly.
For a second, a flicker of genuine shock crossed her face. "Is this a real hospital consent form?"
"It’s a falsified document," Julian said smoothly, stepping right next to the detective. "Dr. Thorne is acting outside his scope. That form was stolen from a private research study conducted by Bennett Medical Laboratories—a company I represent. It was never executed. It was never authorized. Someone placed that paper in my family’s file to frame me."
"To frame you?" I laughed, a harsh, disbelieving sound that broke the tension in my throat. "Julian, you signed the land deeds for Bennett Medical! You own thirty percent of their holding company! I looked up your corporate filings three months ago when Sarah started asking me for money!"
Julian’s eyes locked onto mine. The mask slipped for just a fraction of a second, revealing a abyss of pure, murderous rage.
"Detective," Julian said quietly. "My sister-in-law is clearly suffering from paranoid delusions. I am requesting that my daughter, Lily, be released into my custody immediately, and that a formal investigation be opened into how Mrs. Miller obtained confidential corporate documents."
"Detective, you can't let him take Lily," I pleaded, grabbing the officer’s sleeve. "If she leaves this hospital with him, she won't survive the night. Look at the form! Look at my daughter's name! They were going to take Emma next!"
Detective Ramirez looked down at Emma, who was staring up at her with large, silent tears finally rolling down her cheeks. The detective’s hand trembled slightly on her notepad.
"Dr. Thorne," Ramirez said slowly. "Where is the child right now?"
"She’s in Treatment Room 4," Dr. Thorne replied instantly. "And as long as I am the attending physician on this shift, she is under a protective medical hold. No one—not Mr. Vance, not Mrs. Vance, and not the police—is removing that child until a forensic medical examiner completes a full abuse evaluation."
Julian’s jaw tightened. "Dr. Thorne, you are making a career-ending mistake."
"Then I’ll open a private clinic," Dr. Thorne spat back. "Because I didn't take the Hippocratic Oath just to cover up human trafficking for corporate lawyers."
Suddenly, the hospital’s intercom system crackled to life, a loud, jarring beep piercing the room.
"Code Pink. Code Pink. Pediatric wing, Section B, Treatment Room 4. All available security report immediately."
My heart stopped.

Treatment Room 4.
That was Lily’s room.
