Chapter 4 - The Vanishing

Before the intercom announcement had even finished echoes through the hallways, I was running.

I didn't care about the security guards, I didn't care about Julian, and I didn't care about the police officers shouting behind me. I grabbed Emma’s hand, lifting her nearly off her feet as I sprinted through the double doors leading into the restricted clinical wing.

"Claire! Stop!" Detective Ramirez shouted behind us, her heavy footsteps thumping against the floor.

Dr. Thorne was ahead of me, his blue scrubs a blur as he rounded the corner toward Section B. The hallway was lined with quiet patient rooms, but outside Room 4, the door was wide open, swinging gently on its hinges.

Inside, the room was chaotic. A heart monitor was emit a high-pitched, continuous flatline tone, its wires dangling loose over the side of the small hospital bed. The white privacy curtain was torn from its ceiling track, half-draped across the floor.

The room was completely empty.

"Where is she?!" Dr. Thorne roared, rushing into the room and checking the small bathroom attached to the back wall. "Where is the intake nurse?!"

Sitting on the floor near the far wall was Nurse Hannah—the gentle woman who had crouched down to talk to Lily in the lobby just twenty minutes ago. Her uniform was torn at the shoulder, and a dark, purplish bruise was already blooming along her jawline. She was clutching her head, her eyes wide with terror and confusion.

"Nurse Hannah!" Dr. Thorne dropped to his knees beside her, taking her shoulders. "What happened? Who came in here?"

"They... they had a transport order," Hannah stammered, her voice shaking violently as she pointed toward the emergency exit doors at the end of the side hallway. "Two men... in private paramedic uniforms. They said... they said the state child welfare agency authorized an immediate transport to the county trauma center. I asked to see their credentials... and one of them pushed me. They grabbed the girl, put her on a gurney, and ran!"

"Oh God," I whimpered, dropping to my knees as the room spun around me. "Oh God, Lily..."

"Which exit?!" Detective Ramirez yelled, rushing into the room with her service weapon drawn.

"The south loading dock!" Hannah sobbed. "The service elevator!"

Julian Vance walked into the room slowly, his hands resting casually in his suit pockets. He looked around at the torn curtain, the bruised nurse, and the empty bed with an expression of mild, polite concern.

"What a tragedy," Julian said smoothly, though his voice lacked even a hint of emotion. "It seems my daughter has been abducted by external operatives. Detective, I suggest you shut down the city perimeter immediately."

I stood up, stepping right in front of Julian. I was shorter than him, weaker than him, and completely outmatched in every way that mattered. But in that moment, as I looked at the man who had ordered my niece's body to be cut open, I felt something cold and lethal wake up inside me.

I raised my right hand and slapped him across the face with every ounce of strength in my body.

The sound echoed through the sterile room like a gunshot.

Julian’s head snapped to the side. The smooth, practiced composure vanished. He touched his cheek, where a bright red mark was beginning to swell, and stared at me with pure, unadulterated venom.

"You touch me again, Claire," Julian whispered, "and I will ensure you spend the next twenty years in a state penitentiary for child endangerment, kidnapping, and assault."

"Where is she, Julian?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm. "Tell me where you sent her, or I swear to God I will spend every penny I have, every breath I have, publishing every line of that donor form on every television network in this country."

Julian leaned down until his lips were inches from my ear. "You don't have any money, Claire. You don't have a legal team. And by midnight tonight, the Bennett Medical database will be completely wiped. The form Dr. Thorne saw won't exist. The blood samples will be destroyed. And you... you will be just another crazy aunt who lost her mind after her sister went to rehab."

He turned on his heel and walked out of the room, calling over his shoulder to Detective Ramirez. "Detective, I am going to my office to assist with the search effort. I expect hourly updates."

"Claire," Dr. Thorne said quietly, holding a small slip of paper he had just retrieved from Nurse Hannah’s pocket. "Look at this."

I turned, my breathing ragged. "What is it?"

"Before they knocked Hannah down," Dr. Thorne whispered, making sure Detective Ramirez was out of earshot as she yelled into her radio, "Hannah managed to pull the transport wristband off the lead paramedic. It has a localized tracking RFID tag used for private ambulance routing."

Dr. Thorne tapped a small black code printed on the plastic band.

"This tag isn't from the city ambulance service," he said. "It belongs to a private medical transport company registered under a holding group called St. Jude Bio-Tech."

"That’s Julian’s company," Sarah’s voice rang out from the doorway. She was leaning against the frame, her face pale, her arms wrapped tightly around her stomach. "St. Jude Bio-Tech... it isn't a hospital, Claire. It’s a private surgical facility built inside an old textiles warehouse twenty miles north of town."

She looked at me, tears streaming freely down her face.

"They aren't saving Lily," Sarah whispered. "The primary donor graft failed yesterday. They took her back to finish the extraction."
