Chapter 9 - The Restoration of Peace

Six months passed.

The storm that had threatened to destroy our lives cleared away, leaving behind a sky brighter and clearer than anything we had ever known.

The federal investigation into Vance Consulting LLC resulted in a comprehensive indictment. Evelyn Vance pleaded guilty to wire fraud and tax evasion, serving a three-year sentence in federal prison, while Jessica was sentenced to eighteen months for grand theft, corporate fraud, and child endangerment.

With the Vance influence removed entirely from Bennett & Associates Architectural, David was promoted to senior managing partner after uncovering several corrupt billing practices left behind by Richard Vance, who had been forced into early retirement.

David sold his grand, empty mansion in Terrell Hills and bought a beautiful, warm three-bedroom home just two streets away from my apartment.

Every afternoon, Ava and Emma walked home from school together, holding hands, chatterboxes filling the quiet suburban street with endless stories about their teachers, art projects, and games.

One warm Saturday afternoon, we gathered in the spacious backyard of David’s new home for Ava’s ninth birthday party.

There were no formal caterers, no rigid dress codes, no velvet ropes, and no heavy glass doors.

There were long wooden tables covered in bright yellow tablecloths, a bouncing castle set up near the oak trees, and the smell of fresh burgers sizzling on the grill.

Ava’s school friends ran across the grass, playing tag and shouting with joy, while Emma stood beside her cousin, helping her adjust a shiny plastic crown that sat perfectly straight on Ava’s dark hair.
