Chapter 8 - The Judgment

Judge Rodriguez leaned forward, resting her elbows on the bench, looking at Jessica as if she were a parasite.
"A parent who displays such monstrous cruelty toward a child in a public setting—in front of her own daughter—demonstrates a total lack of emotional stability, empathy, and moral fitness to exercise custody," the judge declared.
Arthur Sterling stepped forward frantically. "Your Honor! We request a psychological evaluation before any temporary orders are issued—"
"Request denied!" Judge Rodriguez barked. "Effective immediately, full temporary legal and physical custody of Emma Bennett is awarded exclusively to the father, David Bennett."
David lowered his head onto the wooden table, weeping with overwhelming relief.
"Furthermore," Judge Rodriguez continued, "Jessica Bennett is ordered to surrender her passport immediately. A temporary restraining order is issued prohibiting her from coming within five hundred feet of Emma Bennett, Rachel Bennett, or Ava Bennett."
Jessica sprang out of her chair, screaming frantically. "You can't take my daughter away from me! She is a Vance! She doesn't belong with these low-class library paupers!"
"Bailiff!" Judge Rodriguez commanded sharply. "Remand the petitioner into custody for contempt of court!"
Two deputy sheriffs stepped forward instantly, grabbing Jessica’s arms and forcing them behind her back. The metal cuffs clicked shut around her wrists—the exact same wrists that had slapped the cake plate from my daughter's hands six days earlier.
As she was hauled toward the holding cell doors, kicking and screaming obscenities, she passed right by where I was standing in the gallery.

I looked her dead in the eye, my voice calm and unwavering.
"Family isn't about blood or money, Jessica," I said as the guards pulled her through the door. "It's about how you treat people when you think nobody is watching."
