Chapter 7 - The Custody Hearing

The emergency custody hearing took place on a rainy Thursday morning in Room 304 of the Bexar County Family Courthouse.
Jessica sat at the petitioner's table beside her high-priced lawyer, Arthur Sterling. She was dressed in a subdued black suit, trying desperately to look like a victimized, grieving mother. But without her mother’s financial backing—which had been frozen by federal authorities forty-eight hours earlier—her attorney looked distinctly uncomfortable and unprepared.
David sat at our table with Fiona Vance, while I sat directly behind them in the gallery, holding David’s hand over the wooden barrier.
"Your Honor," Arthur Sterling began, his voice lacking its usual bravado. "My client, Jessica Bennett, is simply seeking to protect her daughter from an unstable domestic environment caused by her husband’s sudden abandonment and the hostile actions of his sister, Rachel Bennett."
Judge Elena Rodriguez, a stern woman with sharp eyes behind silver glasses, peered down over her bench. "Mr. Sterling, I have reviewed the emergency filings. Before we discuss custody arrangements, I want to review the video evidence submitted by the respondent."
Judge Rodriguez hit play on her bench monitor.
The high-definition security footage from Grand Palms Events played clearly across the courtroom screens.
The entire gallery watched in horrified silence as Jessica slapped the cake plate out of eight-year-old Ava's hands, grabbed the young girl violently by the arm, dragged her out of her chair, and locked the glass doors while the other children watched.
The audio was crystal clear: "You can’t touch any of this food. Family only!"
Judge Rodriguez stopped the video. The silence in the courtroom was terrifying.
She looked down at Jessica, her voice shaking with restrained judicial fury.
"Mrs. Bennett," Judge Rodriguez said softly. "Is that you in this video?"
May you like
Jessica stammered, her face turning crimson. "Your... Your Honor, that video was taken out of context! That child was being disobedient and—"
"That child was an eight-year-old guest at a birthday party!" Judge Rodriguez slammed her gavel down with a crack that echoed like a thunderclap. "You physically assaulted a minor child, dragged her across a room, and locked her out while denying her food out of sheer, unadulterated malice!"
