Chapter 6 - THE RAT IN THE TRAP

The fallout from the live news broadcast was swift, brutal, and total.
Within two hours of the airtime, the hashtag #JusticeForLily was trending nationwide. The viral video Megan had posted earlier was flooded with millions of comments condemning her, Carol, and Mark. Protesters gathered outside Megan’s boutique, forcing the city to deploy police barricades.
By Wednesday morning, the Cook County State's Attorney issued an official arrest warrant for Megan Peterson on charges of felony child endangerment and third-degree assault.
At 11:00 AM, Mark Peterson sat in the interrogation room of the 1st District Police Station, waiting for his sister's bail hearing. He looked ten years older, his eyes hollow, his suit wrinkled and dirty.
The heavy door opened, but it wasn't a police officer.
It was Marcus Vance, carrying a slim leather briefcase.
Mark jumped up from his metal chair. "Marcus! Did Chloe send you?! Is she dropping the charges?!"
Marcus didn't sit down. He stood by the door, looking at Mark as if he were a bug under a microscope.
"Chloe didn't send me to drop charges, Mark," Marcus said softly. "She sent me to offer you a choice."
Marcus pulled a single sheet of paper from his briefcase and laid it on the metal table.
"This is a total, irrevocable surrender of parental rights regarding Lily," Marcus explained. "In exchange for signing this document, Chloe will agree not to press secondary civil fraud charges against your father, Frank, regarding the three hundred thousand dollars he misappropriated from Peterson Architecture."
Mark gasped, gripping the edge of the table. "Surrender my parental rights?! She wants me to give up my daughter?!"
"You gave up your daughter the moment you let your sister strike her and did nothing," Marcus corrected flatly. "If you sign this, your father avoids a federal prison sentence, and Chloe will provide a fifty-thousand-dollar cash settlement to allow your parents to buy a modest home in Indiana."
"And what about Megan?" Mark whispered, his hands trembling.
"Megan is facing a minimum of eighteen months in state custody," Marcus replied without a shred of pity. "There is no deal for Megan. There will never be a deal for Megan."
Mark collapsed back into his chair, burying his face in his hands, weeping uncontrollably. He realized the terrifying trap he had walked into. If he refused to sign, his sister went to prison, his father went to prison, his family name was completely destroyed, and he would be bankrupt before the month ended.
If he signed, he saved his father, but he walked away from his daughter forever—and acknowledged to the entire world that he was a coward who had traded his child for his family's financial survival.
"She planned this..." Mark sobbed through his fingers. "She planned every single step..."

"No, Mark," Marcus said, leaning over the table. "Chloe didn't plan this. She just gave your family enough freedom to reveal who you truly were. You built your own trap. Chloe just closed the door."
Mark pulled a pen from his pocket. With shaking hands, he signed his name on the yellow line at the bottom of the page.
