Chapter 5 - THE LIVE BROADCAST

At 6:00 PM sharp, the anchor of Chicago News 5, Sandra Ramos, sat across from me in a glass studio overlooking Michigan Avenue.
The broadcast was being streamed live to over two million viewers across the Midwest.
"Good evening," Sandra began, turning to the camera with a serious expression. "Earlier today, a viral video posted by Megan Peterson accused billionaire logistics heiress Chloe Vance of launching a ruthless campaign of financial destruction against her husband's family following a Thanksgiving argument. Joining us live tonight is Mrs. Chloe Vance."
Sandra turned to me. "Mrs. Vance, Megan Peterson claims you physically assaulted her and evicted her elderly parents over a minor disagreement. How do you respond?"
I sat perfectly still, dressed in a simple, elegant navy silk dress, looking directly into the primary camera lens. My posture was flawless, my demeanor completely serene.
"I don't respond with words, Sandra," I said smoothly. "I respond with evidence."
I gestured to the production control room. "With your permission, I would like to play the unedited, certified audio-visual recording taken from the dining room of the Peterson residence at 4:15 PM on Thanksgiving Day."
Sandra looked surprised, but signaled the control room. "Let's run the tape."
The main television screen cut to the crystal-clear 4K footage.
The entire city of Chicago watched the Peterson dining room. They saw the lavish spread of food paid for by my credit card. They saw Carol sitting at the head of the table. They saw five-year-old Lily standing politely beside her chair.
The audio was pristine:
Lily's small voice: "Thank you, Grandma, but can I please not have the dark meat?"
Megan's sharp voice: "You ungrateful little brat!"
Then came the sharp, loud CRACK of Megan’s hand striking Lily’s face.
The camera caught every detail: the violent force of the slap, Lily’s head snapping back, the immediate red handprint rising on her cheek, and Megan standing over her with her red nails still raised in the air.
The footage continued. It showed Carol complaining about the turkey being ruined. It showed Mark leaning down to whisper to me, telling me to "let it go." It showed Megan sneering at me, asking, "What are you going to do, Chloe?"
Then, it showed me stepping forward and slapping Megan twice.
The video paused on a freeze-frame of Lily weeping, clutching her face, while Mark grabbed my arm and demanded I apologize to his sister.
The studio went dead silent. You could hear a pin drop on the carpet.
Sandra Ramos stared at the screen, her mouth slightly open, her professional anchor composure completely shattered.
I turned back to the camera, my voice calm, clear, and ringing with absolute authority.
"Megan Peterson did not discipline a child," I said into the microphone. "She committed felony assault against a five-year-old girl. Mark Peterson did not protect his daughter; he protected the woman who struck her. And the Peterson family did not get evicted because of a holiday argument; they were evicted because I refuse to allow child abusers to live in properties funded by my late father's estate."
I leaned forward slightly.

"Earlier today, my legal team filed formal criminal charges against Megan Peterson for felony child abuse," I announced. "And I am offering a fifty-thousand-dollar reward to any vendor or former employee who provides evidence of financial fraud regarding Megan Peterson's commercial business operations."
Across the city, inside a cheap airport rental apartment, Megan Peterson dropped her wine glass onto the carpet, staring at the television screen in absolute, paralyzing horror.
