Chapter 9 - The Question on the Cliff

A month later.
Early summer had arrived in Newport. The weather was warm, the ocean breeze sweet with the scent of saltwater and blooming hydrangeas.
Logan had invited Chloe and me to spend the weekend at his family’s private coastal estate in Watch Hill—a magnificent stone cottage perched high on a green cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
It was nothing like Rosewood Estate. There were no fake orchids, no crystal champagne towers, no social climbers scheming in dark corners. There were only open grass lawns, warm sunshine, and the soothing sound of waves crashing against the rocks below.
In the late afternoon, Chloe was sitting on a wooden bench near the garden edge, happily painting a watercolor landscape of the lighthouse in the distance. Her yellow bow caught the warm golden sunlight as she concentrated on her canvas.
Logan and I walked hand-in-hand along the cliffside path, the cool sea grass brushing against our ankles.
Logan wore a simple white linen shirt and trousers, his hair slightly rumpled by the sea breeze. He looked relaxed, happy, and completely at peace.
We stopped at the edge of the stone overlook, watching the sailboats gliding across the blue horizon.
"She’s getting very good with those watercolors," Logan remarked, looking back over his shoulder at Chloe with a fond, paternal smile.
"She learned from the best," I laughed, leaning my head against his shoulder. "Her art teacher says she has a natural eye for perspective."
Logan turned to face me, taking both of my hands in his. His expression became soft, tender, and deeply serious.
"Valerie," he said softly, his voice carrying clearly over the sound of the ocean.
"Yes, Logan?"
"Two years ago, I thought my life was completely planned out," Logan confessed, looking deep into my eyes. "I thought success meant finding a partner who fit a specific profile, building a corporate legacy, and playing by the rules of high society."
He smiled, a warm, genuine expression that reached his dark eyes.
"And then an extraordinary woman in a navy dress walked into a garden, carrying a gift wrapped in discount gold paper," Logan whispered, his thumb gently stroking the back of my hand. "And her brilliant, brave daughter showed me what real strength, real truth, and real loyalty look like."
Logan reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, mahogany jewelry box.
My heart began to race against my ribs, tears gathering in my eyes.
Logan lowered himself onto one knee on the green grass of the cliff, opening the box.
Inside sat an exquisite, custom-designed ring featuring a brilliant solitaire emerald surrounded by a band of fine white diamonds—a ring that symbolized life, growth, and new beginnings.
"Valerie Vance," Logan said, his voice trembling slightly with profound emotion. "You built your own life out of the ashes of betrayal. You proved to the world who you truly are. Will you do me the absolute honor of letting me spend the rest of my life loving you, protecting you, and building a family with you and Chloe?"
I looked down at the man who had seen my worth when the rest of the world tried to hide me in the back row. I looked at the love shining in his eyes—a love that was real, unwavering, and true.
"Yes," I whispered, tears of joy spilling over my cheeks. "Yes, Logan! A thousand times yes!"
Logan stood up, sliding the breathtaking emerald ring onto my finger, and pulled me into his arms.
He kissed me deeply, right there on the cliff edge, as the ocean wind wrapped around us and the golden summer sun set over the horizon.
A loud cheer echoed from behind us.
Chloe dropped her paintbrush, running down the grass path toward us with her hands in the air, her face radiant with pure, unadulterated happiness.
May you like
Logan released me, bent down, and scooped Chloe up in his arms, lifting her high into the air as she squealed with laughter.
I wrapped my arms around both of them, holding my new family tight against my heart.
