Chapter 2 - The Collapse of Rosewood

By 8:00 PM, the fairy lights surrounding Rosewood Estate seemed to mock the absolute chaos unfolding beneath them.

Three patrol cars from the Newport Police Department sat in the gravel driveway, their red and blue strobe lights sweeping across the white orchids and crystal towers. Guests were frantically calling valets, rushing to their luxury sedans to escape the impending social fallout, while reporters from local society rags were already gathering near the wrought-iron perimeter gates.

I sat on a stone bench in the private courtyard behind the main pavilion, wrapping my navy coat around Chloe’s shoulders. She was sipping a glass of warm apple juice that one of the kitchen staff had quietly brought out for her.

The heavy oak doors of the estate’s main office swung open.

Logan walked out, flanked by two senior partners from his law firm and Detective Miller of the Newport Financial Crimes Unit. Behind them, two uniformed officers were escorting Marcus Montgomery. Marcus was wearing handcuffs, his head bowed, his face flushed with embarrassment as he was led toward a waiting squad car.

"You're making a mistake, Logan!" Marcus yelled over his shoulder as he was pushed into the back seat. "She manipulated me! Rachel set the whole thing up!"

Logan didn't even look back as the police car door slammed shut. He adjusted his cuffs, murmured a few words to the detective, and then walked directly toward the bench where Chloe and I were sitting.

"Are you two okay?" Logan asked, stopping a respectful few feet away.

"We're fine," I said, my voice steady despite the adrenaline still surging through my veins. "I... I don't even know what to say, Mr. Montgomery. I had no idea about the documents in my bag. I swear to you—"

"I know, Valerie," Logan interrupted gently, sitting down on the opposite end of the stone bench. "Detective Miller already reviewed the forensic signatures on the conveyance files. Your mother forged your notary stamp and your signature on three separate corporate transfers over the last eight months."

I closed my eyes, a heavy, crushing ache settling in my chest. "My own mother."

"Theresa and Rachel weren't just trying to steal from the Montgomery Foundation," Logan revealed, pulling a slim black tablet from his coat and showing me the initial audit report. "They were using Rosewood Estate as collateral for an unauthorized twelve-million-dollar construction loan. They were ninety days delinquent. They needed my family's foundation to buy the estate development rights today so they could pay off the offshore lenders before the foreclosure notices became public."

I stared at the numbers on the screen. "That’s why they were so eager for this wedding. That’s why everything had to look perfect."

"It was never a wedding," Logan said, his tone turning cold. "It was a corporate heist wrapped in silk and orchids."

Suddenly, the glass doors leading to the bridal suite slammed open.

Rachel stormed out, clutching her train in one hand, her makeup smeared with dark mascara tracks. Theresa followed right behind her, her silver silk dress wrinkled, her voice shrill and hysterical.

"Valerie!" Rachel shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at me as two police officers followed her down the gravel path. "You ruined my life! You brought this miserable little brat here to sabotage my wedding day!"

Theresa rushed up to the bench, her face contorted with a mixture of rage and terror. "Valerie, tell the officers you won't press charges! Tell them it was a family misunderstanding! If you don't drop the forgery complaint, they are going to arrest Rachel for grand larceny!"

I stood up slowly.

For thirty years, I had shrunk under Theresa’s sharp tongue. I had accepted the back-row seats, the laundry detergent Christmas presents, the constant subtle reminders that I was the "disappointment" who failed to bring prestige to the family. I had let them make me feel small because I thought keeping the peace was what a good daughter did.

I looked at Theresa. Then I looked at Rachel.

"No," I said.

Theresa blinked, looking genuinely stunned. "What did you say?"

"I said no, Mother," I repeated, my voice echoing clearly across the courtyard. "I am not dropping anything. I am giving Detective Miller my full cooperation, my notary logs, and every bank statement I possess."

"Valerie!" Rachel wailed, stepping toward me. "I’m your sister! How can you be so heartless?!"

"You put a forged felony document inside my coat bag, Rachel," I said, stepping in front of Chloe to block her from their sight. "You were going to let me go to federal prison for ten years so you could live in a mansion with Logan’s money. You called my daughter useless in front of three hundred people."

I reached down, took Chloe’s small hand in mine, and looked my mother directly in the eyes.

"You wanted us out of the official photographs because we would ruin the family image," I said softly. "Well, take a look around, Mother. There is no family left to photograph."

Detective Miller stepped between us, placing a firm hand on Rachel’s shoulder. "Rachel Vance, you are under arrest for attempted grand larceny, scheme to defraud, and identity theft. You have the right to remain silent..."

As the officers snapped the handcuffs onto Rachel's wrists, Theresa fell back onto the gravel path, weeping hysterically into her silk sleeves.

I didn't watch them drag my sister away. I simply squeezed Chloe’s hand, turned my back on Rosewood Estate, and began walking toward the front gates.
